The Last of the Iron Sisters is a 2017 short-form web documentary episode, which is part of VICE Sports' "Swole" series. The documentary focuses on Danish professional female bodybuilder Helle Trevino, along with her preparation and competing at the 2016 Rising Phoenix World Championships.
Plot
[edit]At the backstage of the 2016 Rising Phoenix World Championships, professional bodybuilder Helle Trevino is praying to God, who she asks for strength, stamina, and confidence to deliver her best performance. Jake & Kristal Wood, founders of the Wings of Strength, created the Rising Phoenix World Championships in 2015 as a response to the removal of prestigious female professional bodybuilding contests, such as the Miss Physique from the Universe Championships in 2011, the Ms. International from the Arnold Sports Festival in 2014 and the Ms. Olympia from the Joe Weider's Olympia Fitness & Performance Weekend in 2015 (removal was announced in 2014).
Two days before the 2016 Rising Phoenix World Championships, in Venice Beach, California, Helle heads back to her house and starts grilling chicken. She is a professional Danish bodybuilder who now lives in California preparing for the 2016 Rising Phoenix World Championships. She reflects on the public perception of female bodybuilders, addressing stereotypes and misconceptions about women with muscular physiques. She discusses the discipline required to succeed in the sport, including strict diets, rigorous training schedules, and the mental toughness needed to persevere in a demanding and often misunderstood profession.
Austin shows up with a box of egg whites to drop off to her house. A table in her house displays her trophies and medals, including the 2003 Ms. Jan Tana Pro Overall & Heavyweight Champion, the 2011 FIBO Power Pro Champion and the 2015 Ms. Chicago Pro Champion trophies. In Veice Beach, she is doing cardio and pull-up legs. Inside a house, she trains her poses in her contest bikini. Lenda Murray, 8-Time Ms. Olympia Champion, shares her perspective on the frustration of striving for greatness in a sport where opportunities for women were shrinking. Despite aspiring to compete on the world’s biggest stage and be the best, many women were left questioning their future in bodybuilding as their presence was increasingly devalued.
For 34 years, Ms. Olympia stood as the premier competition in women’s bodybuilding. However, the event came to an end in 2015, the same year the Rising Phoenix competition was introduced. Lenda expressed that many contestants share the same sentiment about having a dedicated platform to showcase their skills and compete, which she finds genuinely exciting. Helle goes to a nail salon to get a manicure. She commented she came in 2nd at the 2015 Rising Phoenix World Championships and is one of the favorites to win this year.
In Scottsdale, Arizona, at the Talking Stick Resort Hotel, the 2016 Rising Phoenix World Championships is taking place. In a hotel room, Helle and another contestant undergo spray tanning. She comments that her phone has been nonstop with notifications and messages all day. She is emotional from the overwhelming support from her friends and family. She shows a picuture of her sister, who is also pretty muscular too. She comments that the 18 best female professional bodybuilders from all over the world came her to compete.
Irene Andersen, Maria Bello, Lisa Cross and Helle all performan individal posing, with Helle doing a front lat spread pose, a front double bicep pose and a side chest pose. She comes in fourth place. During the posedown, she, along with the 17 other contestants, perform free form posing. She reflects on her performance with a mix of optimism and determination. While she acknowledges that she doesn't perceive any major flaws in her presentation, she recognizes that the judges may have been looking for something she didn’t deliver on stage. Trevino views the outcome as an opportunity to regroup and refine her approach, stating her intention to seek feedback, make improvements, and return stronger in the following year.
