The Fence is a British quarterly satirical, current affairs and literary magazine, founded in 2019. The Press Gazette described it as "something like a cross between Private Eye and the London Review of Books", and its readership as "small but influential".[1]
The Fence received financial backing from Will Pelham, the second son of Charles Pelham, 8th Earl of Yarborough. In 2021, it moved into a small office rented from Soho Estates. As of 2022, it employs four staff, one of whom is full-time.[1]
According to its editor Charles Baker, The Fence's name was inspired by The Face magazine, Zadie Smith's essay Fences: A Brexit Diary, and fences in general.[2]
Notable contributors have included Nesrine Malik, Ian Martin and Fiona Mozley.[3] It counts Graydon Carter, Ben Schott and Chris Addison among its readership.[1]
In addition to the quarterly printed magazine, website and weekly email newsletter, The Fence authored a book, Shit Literary Siblings in 2022.[1][4][5] It also produced a satirical board game, Pandemillions, satirising controversies regarding contracts in the COVID-19 pandemic.[1][6]
In 2024, The Fence sponsored the return of the Carbuncle Cup architecture prize.[7]
