Development

[edit]

On 2 February 2024, Vijay announced through his social media accounts that he would be stepping into the politics arena following the completion of his current projects, The Greatest of All Time (2024) and an upcoming film, which was tentatively titled Thalapathy 69.[5] The Times of India reported the project would be directed by Karthik Subbaraj and produced by Sun Pictures,[6] while Pinkvilla reported the director was not finalised with front-runners as H. Vinoth, Subbaraj or Atlee.[7] However, Vetrimaaran was instead reported to be in talks.[8] The project would also be reportedly funded by D. V. V. Danayya's DVV Entertainment, in their maiden Tamil-language film.[9] In mid March, though, Vetrimaaran during an award function confirmed that he will not be helming the project, which led to Trivikram and Vinoth being front-runners,[10] followed by reports that the latter directing becoming stronger.[11]

Vinoth had initially narrated a script to Vijay, at the same time when the latter was working on Mersal (2017). The actor, however, declined the script and worked on Bigil (2019).[12] Vinoth reportedly narrated the same script to Kamal Haasan which impressed the actor. Haasan finalised him as the director for his 233rd film. The project, however, was shelved.[13] The director then met Vijay again in February 2024 and narrated the same script to him again.[14] The actor, who received 200 crore for his remuneration in The Greatest of All Time, was reported receive 275 crore (US$33 million).[15] In August, Vinoth confirmed that he would direct the project.[16] The project was funded by Venkat K. Narayana's KVN Productions, in their maiden Tamil production. Jagadish Palanisamy, Vijay's manager, and Lohith N. K. served as the co-producers.[17] The company made a public announcement on 14 September, confirming the project.[18]

Pre-production

[edit]

When Vinoth was committed to Haasan's 233rd film, he had received changes from the actor which made to the final script and was narrated to Vijay.[19] Vinoth said the film would be completely made in Vijay's style, unlike most of his previous film's which he considered as political films.[20]

In early-May 2024, Sathyan Sooryan was reportedly chosen as cinematographer, in his second film with Vijay after Master (2021) and Vinoth after Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru (2017).[21] Anirudh Ravichander was chosen to score the music, in his first collaboration with Vinoth.[22] Vinoth had further chosen editor Pradeep E. Ragav.[23] Ramkumar Balasubramaniam was appointed as executive producer of the film by the production house.[24]

Casting

[edit]

Samantha Ruth Prabhu was reportedly cast as the female lead, pairing opposite Vijay for the fourth time after Kaththi (2014), Theri (2016) and Mersal.[25] Bobby Deol was reported as the main antagonist, in his second Tamil film after Kanguva as well as fourth South Indian film.[26]
