Rosa A. Temple High School was a high school for African Americans in Mississippi.It opened in 1959.[1] It closed in 1971. It won theee consecutive Big 8 football championships. Houston Markham was its coach.[2]
It succeeded H. G. H. Bowman High School. O. W. Sanders was its first principal and then Mr. J. E. Stirgus. The high school closed in the wake of desegregation.[1]
Rosa A. Temple was a teacher. Baldwin Ferry Road was renamed Rosa A. Temple Drive for her. A mural and plaque commemorate the school's history.[3][4]
Teachers at the school included Elliot Coleman, TJ Watson, Frank Crump Jr., and Barbara Francis Banks. Lewis W. “Jiving” Jones was band director. A buccaneer was its mascot.[5]
Levern McClelland became the school's basketball coach in 1964 and went on to win a 1967 championship and went 28-0 in 1968 winning a second consecutive championship.[6]
