Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar (born 14 May 1983) is an Indian film director, actor, screenwriter, and producer. He is best known for directing the Marathi film Bucket List (2018), starring Madhuri Dixit in her Marathi film debut.[1] His works as a writer-director also include Ajinkya (2013) and Premsutra (2013).[2] Additionally, he co-wrote the film Pratisaad (2010). Deoskar's short films, including Kalakaar (2005), Ropta (2008), Bachhon ka Khel (2008), and Sunehari Raakh (2009), have been featured in various film festivals globally. He made his acting debut in the Marathi film Baba (2019).[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Tejas Deoskar was born in Nagpur, Maharashtra, to Vijay Govind Deoskar, an architect and theatre personality, and Prabha Vijay Deoskar, who worked as an announcer at All India Radio. He completed his schooling at Paranjape Vidyalaya and Hadas High School, Nagpur, followed by a Bachelor of Architecture from Priyadarshini College of Engineering and Architecture in 2005. In college, Deoskar was more into extracurricular activities, which later influenced his creative work.[4]
His early exposure to theatre through his parents influenced his creative pursuits. He also actively participated in sports, representing Maharashtra in the National Roller Skating Championships, where he won Silver (1988) and Bronze (1989) medals.
Career
[edit]2005–2013: early work and short films
[edit]Deoskar started his career in Nagpur, working with a local media company in various roles such as sound recordist, lyricist, video editor, scriptwriter, and director for non-fiction films. His short film Kalakaar gained international recognition in 2005. Over the following years, he made several short films, including Bachhon ka Khel and Sunehari Raakh, which were recognized at various film festivals.
In 2009, Deoskar co-wrote the film Pratisaad (2010), which gained attention in the Marathi film industry.
2013–2018: breakthrough with Bucket List
[edit]In 2013, Deoskar directed his first feature film Ajinkya, which received critical acclaim for its sports-based narrative.[2] His next feature film Premsutra was released the same year.
In 2018, Deoskar directed Bucket List, marking the Marathi film debut of Bollywood star Madhuri Dixit. The film was co-produced by Blue Mustang Creations, Dark Motion Pictures, and Dark Horse Cinemas, and was presented by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions.[1] Bucket List became a milestone in the Marathi film industry, gaining both commercial success and critical appreciation.
2019–present: acting and Hindi film ventures
[edit]Deoskar made his acting debut in the Marathi film Baba (2019), which was showcased at international film festivals, winning over 30 awards.[5][6] The film was also nominated at the Golden Globes under the foreign-language films category.[7]
In 2021, he signed his first Hindi film, Chhatriwali, produced by Ronnie Screwvala's RSVP and starring Rakul Preet Singh,[8] which was released on ZEE5 in January 2023. The film dealt with sexual health education and received praise from the industry.[9] His next project, Ground Zero, starring Emraan Hashmi and Sai Tamhankar, is slated for release in late 2024.[10]
Personal life
[edit]Tejas Deoskar married Juilee Hoshing, a landscape architect, on 19 January 2012. Juilee runs her own firm, Green Impressions, and works as a landscape set designer in films and advertisements. The couple shared their love story in a candid interview.[11]
