Takumi Kawanishi (川西 拓実, Kawanishi Takumi, born June 23, 1999) is a Japanese singer and actor. He debuted as a member of the Japanese boy band JO1 in 2020, after placing third in the first season of Produce 101 Japan.
Early life
[edit]Takumi Kawanishi was born on June 23, 1999, in Hyogo, Japan.[2] He was a member of his high school's baseball club, having played against Yomiuri Giants' pitcher Iori Yamasaki.[3]
He was inspired to become a singer after watching an artist perform on TV when he was 11 years old.[4]
Career
[edit]2019–2020: Produce 101 Japan and debut in JO1
[edit]Prior to his debut, Kawanishi had passed the second screening of the "BoysAward Audition" jointly held by Avex and GirlsAward in 2015, and planned to attend the next stage of the audition, but cancelled the trip to Tokyo that would have completed the process. After graduating from high school, he worked as a buggy engineer at Kawasaki Heavy Industries[5] before auditioning for Produce 101 Japan in September 2019, after convincing his family despite having no prior experience in dancing or singing.[4] The show concluded in December, where Kawanishi finished in third place with 252,885 votes.[6]
After undergoing training in Korea,[7] Kawanishi debuted in JO1 with their debut single, Protostar, which was released on March 4, 2020, under Lapone Entertainment.[8]
2021–present: Acting debut
[edit]On February 26, 2021, Kawanishi appeared in the Yoshimoto Kogyo-produced anthology film, Meters Away, Worlds Apart alongside his group-mates Issei Mamehara, Ren Kawashiri and Syoya Kimata.[9]
On March 3, 2023, it was announced that Kawanishi will play the leading role of Souma Shiki in the live adaptation of the web manga series Play It Cool, Guys, alongside Yuta Nakamoto, Dori Sakurada, and Maito Fujioka.[4][7][10] The first episode was aired on April 14.[11]
Kawanishi got his first lead role in a movie with Buzzy Noise , a film produced by GAGA Corporation and directed by Hiroki Kazama. He acted alongside Hiyori Sakurada and played the role of Kiyosumi Umino. The film was released on May 3.[4] On March 6, it was confirmed that Kawanishi will be recording the song "Surge" for the movie.[12] The digital single Surge <single edit>, was released on April 29, including a rearranged version of the theme song a new song called "Heaven" which was written and composed by Kawanishi.[13] A blue-ray and DVD version of the movie was released on December 18 and included behind the scenes footage and commentary from the actors.[14] Kawanishi also composed and wrote the lyrics for JO1's single "Happy Unbirthday" which was released on March 26.[2]
On April 7, it was announced that Kawanishi will appear in the film Run for Money the Movie: Tokyo Mission , which was released on July 19 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fuji TV's variety show Run for Money.[15] He played the lead role of Tachibana Yamato, a sprinter from Meio University's track and field team, and co-starred with his groupmates Sukai Kinjo and Syoya Kimata, alongside Sota Nakajima, Taiki Sato, and Leiya Seguchi of Fantastics from Exile Tribe.[4][16]
Public image and artistry
[edit]Kawanishi is noted as a multi-talented artist with a reputation of great performance ability and creativity in his group.[7][17]
