Background

Scandinavianism

1829 is traditionally considered to mark the start of Scandinavianism as it was proclaimed that Sweden and Denmark no longer had any reason for conflict. Scandinavism as a movement sought to strengthen the ties between the Scandinavian countries and to celebrate their shared heritage. While being most prominent among students, the movement did become large enough to influence the politics of Scandinavian countries. Oscar I of Sweden himself was a Scandinavialist.
