The Pantas and Ting Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology (SCET) is a center for innovation at the University of California, Berkeley that provides courses and educational resources for aspiring entrepreneurs. The Center's mission is to “empower innovators to positively change the world.”[1]

SCET was conceived by UC Berkeley Dean A. Richard Newton and was started by Founding Director Ikhlaq Sidhu in 2005. At the time, UC Berkeley offered very few entrepreneurship courses to undergraduates, particularly STEM students, and mentoring support was sparse.

Since 2005, SCET has worked with Berkeley’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) council to launch dozens of educational programs, acceleration opportunities, investment options, and IP resources. SCET’s aim is to develop a culture of “changemaking” through the creation and financial support of I&E units, programs, labs and resources.

SCET’s core academic programs currently serve 2,000-2,500 students per year.

History

[edit]

The Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology launched in Berkeley’s College of Engineering in 2005 under Founding Director Ikhlaq Sidhu. The Center pioneered the Berkeley Method of Entrepreneurship (BMoE) pedagogy, which focuses on training students to develop entrepreneurial behaviors and mindsets, in an effort to bring together academia and industry.[2]

In 2007, the Center developed the A. Richard Newton series course and the Venture Lab, leading to the creation of their global network. This also helped to establish UC Berkeley’s SkyDeck accelerator program, which opened officially in 2012.[3]

In 2008, the Center helped establish the Fung Institute for Engineering Leadership and Master of Engineering degree program. In 2011, it launched its own Professional Programs in engineering leadership.[4]

The Center was renamed the Pantas and Ting Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology in 2015, honoring benefactors Pantas Sutardja and Ting Chuk.[5]

From 2016-18, SCET launched X-Labs (now called Collider Labs), which created foundational innovation labs, such as the Berkeley Blockchain Xcelerator and the Alternative Meats Lab[6], which was the first in a series of Collider Labs that offer courses, programs, and research.[7][8]

Founding Director Ikhlaq Sidhu stepped down in 2022[9], leading to the formation of a new SCET leadership team.
