A sports equinox is a term referring to a day when all four of "The Big Four"1 in American professional sports, composing of Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), and the National Hockey League (NHL) play games on the same day. As of November 2024, there have been 31 sports equinoxes, with the most recent happening on October 28, 2024.[1] The first sports equinox happened on October 17, 1971 in which Game 7 of the World Series was featured alongside twelve NFL games, three NBA games, and six NHL games.[2]
Typically, sports equinoxes happen on Sundays, Mondays, or Thursdays as those are almost always the only days the NFL has games on its schedule.[3]
^1 Despite not being a member of the "Big Four", Major League Soccer (MLS) is sometimes included.[4]
Super sports equinox
[edit]A super sports equinox is used to refer not only to when all four leagues play in the same day, but when all four teams in the same city play. To date, this has only happened twice. The first was in 2001 in Phoenix, Arizona. The Cardinals, Diamondbacks, Suns, and Coyotes all played on November 4. The Diamondbacks won the World Series that night, Phoenix's first and only championship to date in any of the leagues, while the other three teams lost.[5] The second happened on October 28, 2018 when Los Angeles, California had the Dodgers, Rams, Clippers, Galaxy, Kings, and Anaheim Ducks all play at home, which did not happen in Arizona.[6]
