The untitled Spider-Man: No Way Home sequel is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man, co-produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios, and distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. It is intended to be the 40th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man film series. The film is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, and stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker / Spider-Man alongside Zendaya and Charlie Cox.
Sony was developing a fourth MCU Spider-Man film by August 2019 alongside Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Producer Amy Pascal revealed in November 2021 that the film was intended to be the first in a new trilogy of Holland Spider-Man films, with Sony and Marvel Studios actively beginning work on the story in December. McKenna and Sommers returned as writers from the prior films by February 2023, and Cretton was hired to direct by October 2024. Filming is expected to last from June to October 2025 in the United Kingdom.
The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on July 24, 2026, as part of Phase Six of the MCU.

Production
[edit]Development
[edit]In August 2019, Sony Pictures was reported to be developing a fourth Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Spider-Man film alongside the third, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).[3] Later that month, Sony announced that it would be making No Way Home without the involvement of Marvel Studios and its president Kevin Feige—as they did with Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) and Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)—after negotiations to update the production deal between the two companies failed.[4] Following a negative fan reaction to this announcement, Sony and Marvel's parent company Disney returned to negotiations and announced a new agreement at the end of September which allowed Marvel Studios and Feige to produce No Way Home for Sony with producer Amy Pascal.[5] In February 2021, star Tom Holland said No Way Home was the final film in his contract with Sony and Marvel but he hoped to continue playing Peter Parker / Spider-Man in the future.[6][7] Zendaya, who portrays Michelle "MJ" Jones-Watson in the MCU, said in July that she did not know if another MCU Spider-Man film would be made.[8] That October, Holland said No Way Home was being treated as the end of a franchise that began with Homecoming. He said any further MCU Spider-Man films would differ from the first trilogy and feature a tonal change.[9]
Holland said in November 2021 that he was unsure if he should continue making Spider-Man films and felt he would have done something wrong if he was still portraying the character in his thirties. He expressed interest in a film focusing on the Miles Morales version of Spider-Man instead of Parker. Despite this, Pascal hoped to continue working with Holland on future Spider-Man films,[10] and said work on the first film in a new trilogy was about to begin.[11] The Hollywood Reporter reported that Sony did not yet have official plans for further MCU Spider-Man films but the studio hoped to continue its collaboration with Marvel Studios.[12] Holland said he did not know about plans for future Spider-Man films, but there were some "very, very exciting things" being discussed and he felt the franchise had a bright future.[13] The next month, he added that he had achieved what he wanted with the character and was ready to say goodbye to the role if he did not end up starring in another film, but he would be saddened to leave the franchise.[14] Pascal expressed her hope that the partnership between Sony and Disney would last forever, and Feige promised that it would not break down again as it did during the development of No Way Home. He said Holland's Parker would return in another MCU film at some point, and confirmed that he had begun discussing the story for the next Spider-Man film with Pascal, Sony, and Disney.[15] This would continue from Parker's "momentous decision" at the end of No Way Home to make everyone forget who he is,[16] which Pascal subsequently said was expected to be the focus of the next film.[17]
By April 2022, when series director Jon Watts exited as director of Marvel Studios' Fantastic Four film (2025), Sony was expecting Watts to return for the next Spider-Man film.[18] A month later, Sony Pictures CEO and chairman Tom Rothman confirmed that he hoped the "whole group" from the previous films would return, including Watts, Holland, and Zendaya.[19] Feige said in February 2023 that they had a story for the film with "big ideas" and writers had begun work on it,[20] but this was put on hold in May because of the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Pascal said work would resume on the film after the strike concluded.[21] Holland said he had been involved in meetings about the film and these had also been put on hold because of the writers' strike.[22] He was happy with the creative reasoning that had been proposed for why a fourth film should be made, but was apprehensive about the stigma surrounding fourth films in franchises and felt they had "hit a home run with our first franchise and there's a part of me that wants to walk away with my head held high and pass the baton" to another actor.[23] The writers' strike ended in late September,[24] and Holland confirmed in November that discussions about the film had restarted. He stated that he would only return for a fourth film if it would "do justice to the character".[25]
Journalist Jeff Sneider reported in January 2024 that Marvel Studios was searching for a director,[26][27] with Watts, Drew Goddard, and Justin Lin being considered.[27][28][29] Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers were writing the film after working on the prior three Spider-Man films, while Holland and Zendaya were both expected to return.[27][28] Filming was expected to begin in 2025,[28] but Sneider reported in March 2024 that it was scheduled to begin in September or October of that year and this had caused filming of the third season of Euphoria (2019–present) to be delayed, to accommodate for Zendaya's schedule.[29] Variety reported that the script was still being worked on and there was no director or filming date set.[30] Filming was expected to take place in the United Kingdom.[31] In April, Holland said they were giving the writers the time that they needed to work on the script following the writers' strike. He added that he would "always want to do Spider-Man films" and he owed his career to the franchise, but reiterated that he wanted to make sure the next film was made the right way to preserve the legacy of the previous trilogy. Holland was able to have more input on the fourth film's story because he was involved in the creative process much earlier than he was for the previous Spider-Man films.[32] Feige said in July that a draft of the film was being submitted "relatively soon",[33] and he added that Watts may not be available to direct the film due to his busy schedule with other projects.[34] Watts ultimately chose not to direct the film.[35]
After further work on the script, the studios began meeting with directors for the film. Destin Daniel Cretton was the top choice to direct by September 2024 when he was in early talks. Cretton had an overall deal with Marvel Studios and worked with the studio on the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021) and the television miniseries Wonder Man (2025).[36][37] The fourth Spider-Man film was said to be the priority for Marvel Studios over a sequel to Shang-Chi that Cretton was developing.[38] Holland and Zendaya had discussed the film's development with the studios and were in talks to return by then,[36] with filming expected to begin in early 2025.[37] Sneider reported that the film was planned to be released in 2026. He questioned the extent of Zendaya's role in the film compared to the previous Spider-Man films due to her busy schedule in 2025 filming the third season of Euphoria and a third Dune film.[39] In October, Holland said he was excited about the film after reading a draft with Zendaya, though he felt the script still needed work. He said one of the challenges of the film was fitting it into the overall plan for the MCU and described the schedule needed for that as "a tall order but definitely achievable with the fantastic people we have working on it now".[40] He said filming would begin in mid-2025,[41] working around his commitments to Marvel Studios' crossover film Avengers: Doomsday and director Christopher Nolan's film The Odyssey, both scheduled to be released in 2026. Zendaya no longer needed to work around filming the next Dune film which had been delayed to early 2026.[42] Soon after Holland's comments, he and Cretton were confirmed to have signed on for the fourth Spider-Man film which was scheduled for release on July 24, 2026.[1] By November, it was unclear if Zendaya would reprise her role in the film after she joined Holland in The Odyssey,[43] and Sneider subsequently reported that filming would not begin until late 2025 or early 2026 and that there was potential for its release date to be delayed as a result.[44] The next month, he further reported that Zendaya's role in the film had been "severely reduced" due to her schedule, with filming set to take place from June to October 2025 in between the filming schedules for Euphoria season 3 and the third Dune film. He also reported that Charlie Cox was slated to reprise his role as Matt Murdock / Daredevil from No Way Home and other MCU media; alien Symbiotes were included in the script; a new group of Parker's classmates would be introduced; and Sacha Baron Cohen was expected to appear as Mephisto, a role he was also expected to play in the television miniseries Ironheart (2025).[2]
Filming
[edit]Principal photography is expected to last from June to October 2025,[2] in the United Kingdom,[31][third-party source needed] under the working title Blue Oasis.[45][third-party source needed] Filming was originally expected to begin in September or October 2024,[29] before it was expected to begin throughout 2025 or in early 2026.[37][41][44]
Release
[edit]Theatrical
[edit]The film is scheduled to be released by Sony Pictures Releasing in the United States on July 24, 2026.[1] Disney had intended to release an unspecified Marvel Studios film on that date but removed this from their release schedule in August 2024; Germain Lussier at Gizmodo speculated at the time that this change was done so Sony could use the date for the fourth Spider-Man film.[46] It will be a part of Phase Six of the MCU.[47]
Home media
[edit]In April 2021, Sony signed deals with Netflix and Disney for the rights to their 2022 to 2026 film slate, following the films' theatrical and home media windows.[48][49] Netflix signed for exclusive "pay 1 window" streaming rights, which is typically an 18-month window and included future Spider-Man films following Spider-Man: No Way Home.[48] Disney signed for "pay 2 window" rights for the films, which would be streamed on Disney+ and Hulu as well as broadcast on Disney's linear television networks.[49][50]
