Origin

[edit]

In 1977 he graduated from the Faculty of History of the Moscow Pedagogical Institute named after V. I. Lenin. He taught at the Moscow Institute of Petrochemical and Gas Industry named after I. M. Gubkin. Then until 1990 he worked as a senior researcher at the Institute of General History of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where in 1983 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of historical sciences on the topic "Struggle in the U.S. Senate on socio-economic problems (1971-1974)" (specialty 07.00.03 General history (corresponding period)).[1] Author of more than 30 articles and a book on the political history of the United States. He was one of the co-authors of the book "Informals. Social initiatives" (1990). Awarded by the American Center for International Leadership for "great contribution to the development of socio-political thought in his country" (1990).

The name of Stankevich is connected with the story of his privatization of the apartment of the former Soviet Minister of Foreign Trade N. S. Patolicheva,[2][3] as well as accusations of corruption in connection with the holding of the festival "Red Square Invites" in Moscow in July 1992 (the festival turned out to be deeply unprofitable for the city budget, but its organizers, behind whom Stankevich stood, were able to purchase large amounts of foreign currency at a preferential "state" rate in conditions of galloping inflation).[4]
