Draft:Serge Vollin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Serge Vollin (born Cherif Benamor on December 20, 1946 in Algeria) is a French painter and author.

Life

[edit]

Vollin was born to Berber parents in Ghassira in the Atlas Mountains in Algeria. At the age of 17 he went to France, lived, studied and worked in Grenoble before deciding to move to Germany in 1973.

His childhood and youth were marked by traumatic experiences of the Algerian War (1954-1962). A shocking experience at the age of 8 triggered nightmares, which he began to draw while herding goats. Until soldiers became aware of his passion and gave him notebooks and pens (later a barrel of ink and a quill), he scratched his dreams into rocks with flint stones and used slates and chalk.

As a teenager and young man in France he met people who supported him and with whom he developed lifelong friendships. In France and Germany he worked in various jobs - always with the real goal of financing his life as an artist. The grueling conflict between existence, art and traumatic childhood experiences repeatedly took its toll and led to breakdowns that characterize the phases of his painting.

In 2005 he met Fatima Besnaci-Lancou, a French writer known for her Harkis portraits. Harkis were Algerian auxiliary troops who fought for France in the Algerian War (1954-1962). A joint project was created in which Serge Vollin visualized Fatima's Harkis portraits. On February 7, 2024, texts and images were presented at the Assemblée Nationale in Paris and the story of the Harkis with 62 works by Serge Vollin was made accessible to the general public at the Dôme des Invalides.[2]

Today Serge Vollin lives in Munich, is married and has a son.

Work

[edit]

Vollin's works have been exhibited in 1998 at the Luise Ross Gallery in New York City, in 2006 at the Berlin Art Brut Biennale and most recently in 2024 as part of a memorial program of the French government in Paris.

His oeuvre, which now comprises around 1,700 works, does not fit into any of the classic categories and includes modern art, art brut, nudes and therapy art in oil and acrylic. Some works serve as templates for lead glass, copperplate engraving and mosaic works, are taken up by a fashion designer or are the starting point for extensive tapestry weaving works (project in Voiron, France).

He says of himself that he has retained a child's soul for his art. He paints directly and impulsively, works without sketches or studies. Triggers are impressions from encounters, experiences and his dreams throughout his life. Works are created exclusively at the table or, in the case of larger formats, on the floor. Due to the intensity of the engagement and the detailing, he usually needs more than half a year for the latter.
