Science and Arts University (SAU), established in 1996 in Yazd, Iran, is a non-profit institution affiliated with the Academic Center for Education, Culture, and Research (ACECR), a national organization known for its academic contributions across Iran[1]. The institution attained official university status in 2013 following approval from the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. The university operates three campuses located in Yazd, Ardakan, and Ashkezar, serving students from across Iran. It is recognized as one of the largest non-governmental universities in Yazd province.

Mission and Vision

[edit]

The university’s motto, “Science and Art, Knowledge and Skill,” highlights its mission to blend theoretical education with practical training. SAU is dedicated to providing programs that align with the specific needs of Iranian society, particularly focusing on fields that enhance students' employability by integrating hands-on skill development and applied knowledge.

Academic Structure

[edit]

SAU enrolls over 8,000 students in a wide range of academic programs spanning the humanities, engineering, basic sciences, arts, and architecture. The university offers 79 undergraduate and graduate programs, structured to meet the country’s socio-economic needs. Faculty members number approximately 90, with additional instructional support from visiting lecturers and adjunct professors.

Research and Collaboration with Industry

[edit]

The university’s research programs emphasize practical application and innovation, facilitated through collaborations with prominent organizations. Notable partnerships include affiliations with the Royan Research Institute and New Technology Research Institute, providing students with access to cutting-edge research in biotechnology, engineering, and medical sciences. Additionally, SAU’s collaboration with the Yazd Science and Technology Park aims to promote entrepreneurial activities among students and foster the growth of knowledge-based enterprises. Each year, SAU organizes skill development workshops, seminars, and hands-on courses, benefitting over 3,500 students.

Entrepreneurship and Industry Partnerships

[edit]

With a strong focus on entrepreneurship, SAU has established connections with local industries and business parks, offering students internship opportunities, on-site industrial training, and workshops. These partnerships are designed to equip students with practical experience, with a particular emphasis on fields that address evolving technological demands, such as artificial intelligence and robotics. Through these programs, SAU aims to prepare students for the Iranian job market and support the growth of startup ventures.

Faculties

[edit]

SAU is organized into three primary faculties:

  1. Faculty of Engineering and Basic Sciences – Offering programs in fields like civil engineering, computer science, information technology, mechanical engineering, and environmental sciences.
  2. Faculty of Humanities – Covering disciplines such as psychology, law, accounting, and management.
  3. Faculty of Art and Architecture – Including programs in architecture, visual communication, textile design, and graphic arts. This faculty is recognized as the largest of its kind in Yazd Province.

In addition to the primary faculties, SAU houses a specialized department for food science and engineering, reflecting its commitment to interdisciplinary education aligned with regional industry needs.

Key Initiatives

[edit]

SAU engages students through various professional development activities, including skill-building courses, industry workshops, and academic seminars. The university’s recent additions of postgraduate programs in artificial intelligence and construction management demonstrate a strategic expansion into high-demand fields. To support these initiatives, SAU has created an AI Center on its Yazd campus, aimed at becoming the region’s largest hub for artificial intelligence research and development.

Administrative Structure

[edit]

The administrative leadership at SAU is headed by President Dr. Mohammad Hossein Talebi. Key members of the administration include Dr. Seyyed Mahmoud Tabatabaei (Vice President for Education), Dr. Seyyed Mohammad Kazemi (Vice President for Student Affairs), and Dr. Hamed Fallah Tafti (Vice President for Research). This team oversees the university’s academic programs, research agendas, and industry partnerships, with a focus on aligning the institution’s offerings with national educational policies and labor market trends.

Achievements and Recognition

[edit]

In 2023, SAU was ranked among the top six non-governmental universities in Iran by the Islamic World Science Citation Database (ISC), which tracks the research output of Iranian universities. The university also consistently ranks in the top ten for publications in national and international scientific journals, and SAU faculty members are actively involved in research, producing articles that contribute to fields such as biotechnology, computer science, and environmental engineering. SAU’s research initiatives have led to the establishment of seven knowledge-based companies, contributing to Iran’s science and technology landscape.

International Collaboration and Expansion

[edit]

SAU is actively pursuing international partnerships to broaden its educational reach, aiming to establish exchange programs with universities in Asia and Europe. These partnerships are expected to facilitate student and faculty exchanges, enabling collaboration on research projects and expanding access to global educational resources.

Future Plans

[edit]

SAU has outlined plans to expand its postgraduate offerings, particularly in interdisciplinary areas relevant to industry. Future initiatives include developing new academic programs and expanding facilities to support research in artificial intelligence, robotics, and sustainable development. The university’s five-year strategic plan aims to enhance its role in both regional and national innovation ecosystems.
