Satyam Mishra is an educator from Bhagalpur, Bihar, India, with a background in engineering. His work primarily focuses on supporting first-generation college students, refugee children, children with special needs, and adult women.[1] He is the first educator from the "Hindi Belt" (Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh) to have been selected as a Finalist for the $1 million annual Global Teacher Prize 2021.[2] [3] He was felicitated by the Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Nitish Kumar and the then Education Minister of Bihar, Shri Vijay Kumar Chaudhary for his achievements and contributions in the field of education. [4] The Global Teacher Prize given by Varkey Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO has been referred to by journalists as the Nobel Prize for teaching, highlights and celebrates the profession while giving greater recognition to the work of teachers all over the world. He also works with the Teach For All as Mentor for their Inclusive Education Fellowship conducted in partnership with the Oak Foundation. In 2022, he was selected by the US Government to join Fulbright Program. [5] [6] He has been selected to pursue Master of Education (Ed.M.) degree at the renowned Harvard University and has been offered a $50,000 (INR 42 Lakhs) scholarship by Harvard. [7]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Satyam is originally from Bhagalpur, Bihar, where he attended Mount Assisi School from Nursery through Grade XII. During his school years, he participated in debates, quiz competitions, and science exhibitions. Mishra later earned a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Information Technology from Manipal Institute of Technology, Karnataka.[8]
Career
[edit]After graduating with an engineering degree, Satyam Mishra was selected as a Fellow by Teach For India. During his fellowship, he taught at Pune's first standalone secondary English medium school, where his students significantly improved their performance in mathematics. The class average in the SSC (Grade 10) Board Exam for Mathematics increased from 58.5 to 80.3 over 18 months, with 80% of the class achieving a distinction. [9] In recognition of his innovative pedagogy in STEM education, Mishra was named a finalist for the Transformational Impact Journey (TIJ) by Teach For India in 2017. [10]
Satyam has worked in various capacities across 18 countries, including India, Nepal, South Africa, Lebanon, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Austria, Bulgaria, and Slovakia. He was the first Indian educator invited to teach and train teachers at the Malala Yousafzai All Girls' School [11], which was established by Malala Yousafzai for Syrian refugee girls. His work in this area received positive recognition from several organizations focused on refugee support and was acknowledged by Dr. Shashi Tharoor, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, who referred to Mishra's work as a "noble task" in a tweet.
He was selected as one of the 45 Network Connectors by Teach For All [12] for his contributions across Asia and Africa. Additionally, he was elected as a Shaper at the Global Shapers Community, an initiative of the World Economic Forum, for his work with marginalised communities. Satyam has also been a speaker at TEDx events three times [13] [14] [15] and was invited to share his ideas and research initiatives on the Josh Talks platform in 2024. [16] [17]
