Sarbjit Singh Jhinjer (born March 26, 1982, in Jhinjran, Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab) is an Indian politician and leader, known for his active involvement in youth and community organizations in Punjab. He has held multiple leadership positions within the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and its youth wing, the Youth Akali Dal (YAD), contributing to youth empowerment and local community development.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Jhinjer was born to Kulwant Singh and Harminder Kaur in the village of Jhinjran in Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab. Raised in a family with agricultural roots, he pursued his education in the local region before becoming involved in student and political activities.
Political career and leadership roles
[edit]Youth leadership
[edit]Jhinjer’s political career began in 2005, when he joined the Youth Akali Dal (YAD), a youth wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal. The following year, in 2006, he was elected President of the Khalsa College Students' Organization (SOI), where he became actively involved in student movements. He was later appointed as General Secretary of Punjab SOI in 2007.[citation needed]
District and State Leadership
[edit]From 2008 to 2015, Jhinjer served as the District President of SOI in Fatehgarh Sahib, overseeing various initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of youth and the local community. His work during this time led to his appointment as the Director of the Youth Development Board, Punjab, a position he held from 2009 to 2012. In this role, Jhinjer promoted youth development programs across the state.[2][1][2]
Village leadership
[edit]From 2013 to 2018, Jhinjer served as the Sarpanch (village head) of Jhinjran, where he contributed to the development of infrastructure and improvements in the village’s quality of life.
Continued political engagement
[edit]Between 2015 and 2021, Jhinjer held the role of President of SOI Malwa Zone and returned to serve as District President of Youth Akali Dal in Fatehgarh Sahib. In 2021, Jhinjer was appointed National President of Youth Akali Dal, a position that solidified his leadership within the political party. He was also named a member of the Core Committee of Shiromani Akali Dal[3][4] in 2023, marking a significant step in his political career.[5][6][7][8][3][9]
Personal life
[edit]Jhinjer is married to Parminder Kaur, and the couple has one son. He continues to reside in his native village, Jhinjran, in Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab.
Controversies
[edit]Jhinjer’s political career has been marked by several controversies:
- 2015 Audio Clip Controversy In 2015, an audio clip featuring conversations among prominent Punjab Congress leaders, including Sukhjinder Raj Singh and Lalli Majithia, was posted on Jhinjer’s social media. The clip implicated the Congress Party in discussions related to a religious movement called Sarbat Khalsa, which had been controversial in Punjab’s political landscape. The Shiromani Akali Dal accused the Congress Party of supporting elements associated with the Sarbat Khalsa congregation, leading to political tensions.[10]
- Criticism of BJP’s Political Strategy In 2021, Jhinjer criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for exploiting the parole of Gurmeet Ram Rahim, the Dera Sacha Sauda chief, for political gains ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections. Jhinjer accused the BJP of using Ram Rahim's parole to influence voters, while alleging discrimination against Sikhs by comparing it to the treatment of other political prisoners. His statements were made in a public Facebook live stream, where he urged the Sikh community to voice opposition to what he described as an unjust system.[11]
