Salem Wolves
[edit]Salem Wolves is an American rock band formed in 2015 in Boston, Massachusetts. The band blends elements of garage rock, power pop, and post-hardcore. They have released several albums and EPs, including Tooth & Nail (2017), Shake (2018), and The Psychotron Speaks (2023).[1] They have been featured in publications such as the Boston Globe, the Boston Herald, and NPR.
History
[edit]Formation and Early Years (2015–2017)
[edit]Salem Wolves was formed in 2015 by vocalist and guitarist Gray Bouchard, drummer Maurice Bouchard, and bassist Harrison Swyter. Drummer Maurice Bouchard was soon replaced by Michael "Woody" Woodrow. They released their debut EP, Black Books, in January 2015, which received significant airplay on Boston radio station WZLX 100.7 FM and was featured in Vanyaland.
Woody was replaced on drums by Paul Koelle, formerly of the band Read Yellow. In December 2015, the band participated in a Converse Rubber Tracks recording session, producing the singles "Peach" and "Shameless," produced by Dave Minehan of the band the Neighborhoods and mastered by Bradford Kreiger.[1]
Breakthrough and Success (2018–2020)
[edit]In 2018, Salem Wolves released their sophomore album, Shake, produced by Chris Johnson of Deafheaven. The album received praise from local and national publications, with the title track earning a "Song of the Year" nomination at the 2018 Boston Music Awards.[2]
In 2020, the band released the single "Titanium," the first offering from their Never Die!!! EP.[3][4]
Recent Activity (2021–present)
[edit]In late 2021, the band underwent lineup changes, with drummer Eliahu Sussman and guitarist Chuck MacSteven departing. They were replaced by drummer Don Schweihofer, bassist Justin Tisdale, and guitarist Sam Valliere.[5]
In 2022, Salem Wolves released the EP Hostile Music, followed by the album The Psychotron Speaks in 2023.[6][7][8] The latter is a concept record inspired by elements of professional wrestling, described by Maximum Rocknroll as, "if BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN was signed to Drive-Thru Records during their darker period in the late 2000s."[9] Boston NPR affiliate station WBUR-FM chose The Psychotron Speaks as one of the 14 albums by 14 albums by New England musicians to listen to in the summer of 2024.[10]
