Sahjobai: A Poet-Saint of the Bhakti Movement
[edit]Sahajo Bai, also known as Sahaj Bai, was a prominent poet-saint from India, born around 1725. She belonged to the Dhusar Vaishya community in Rajputana and was a disciple of Saint Charandas ji, the founder of the Charandasi sect. Her life and teachings emphasize devotion, simplicity, and the inner beauty of spirituality.
Early Life and Transformation
[edit]Sahajo Bai's journey into spirituality began in her youth. After her wedding ceremony, as she was being adorned with makeup, she encountered Sant Charandas ji. His profound statement about inner beauty led her to abandon superficial adornments and dedicate herself to spiritual practices, including prayer and meditation [1][2]. This moment marked her transformation into a devoted disciple.
Contributions and Works
[edit]By the age of eighteen, Sahajo Bai had composed her masterwork titled Sahaj Prakash, which consists of eighty-five devotional songs and couplets known as dohas. Her compositions reflect her deep devotion and serve as guidance for seekers on their spiritual paths[3][4]. She advocated for the practice of chanting divine names and emphasized the body as a vehicle for attaining God.
