Sahiththiyan Sivapalan (born 4 May 1998), known professionally as Sahi Siva is a British Tamil musician, singer, songwriter, and music producer based in London, United Kingdom.[1][2][3] Known for blending contemporary and traditional Tamil musical influences, Sahi has gained recognition for his dynamic performances and viral music videos.[4][5][6] He has made his debut as a playback singer in Indian cinema in Tamil and Telugu languages[7], and will be making his debut as music composer in the upcoming Tamil film "DNA" (2025) starring Atharvaa and Nimisha Sajayan, where he composed, wrote, and performed one song.[8][9]
He rose to fame with two viral feature songs: "Nenjinile Rebirth" (2018) with MC Sai and Chris G, and "Naan Kudikka Poren" (2019) alongside Ratty Adhiththan.[10][11][12] In addition to his work as a recording artist, he is a full-time touring musician and is currently on his "Unnaale Album World Tour (2024/2025)".[13][4]
Early life
[edit]Sahi Siva was raised in London, United Kingdom, by Tamil parents who emigrated from Sri Lanka. Growing up in a multicultural environment, Sahi was deeply influenced by both his Tamil heritage and the vibrant music scene in London. He is the eldest of three siblings, with two younger sisters.[1][4][6]
From the age of five, Sahi began formal training in Sangeetham (Carnatic vocal music) and Mridangam (a classical South Indian percussion instrument). He completed his Arangetram (debut solo performance) at the age of 18, marking a significant milestone in his classical music journey. He learnt the Tamil language from his parents who are both teachers at a local Tamil school in East London. He grew up dancing in a group formed with his cousins and sister, regularly performing together at Tamil talent shows.[4][2]
Sahi attended the selective grammar school, Ilford County High School, where he completed A Levels within the field of Maths, Physics, and Tamil in 2016. He later pursued a degree in Mechanical Engineering (MEng) at Imperial College London and graduated in 2021.[14]
Career
[edit]2016–2018: Career beginnings
[edit]Sahi Siva began his music career by combining his classical training in Sangeetham and Mridangam with contemporary Tamil and Western musical influences.[6] Drawing inspiration from his Sri Lankan Tamil heritage and his London upbringing, Sahi developed a distinctive sound that resonated with a broad audience.[15] Sahi's early work included posting covers of popular Tamil songs on social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube, gaining attention.[16][3][4] He began writing his own songs from the age of 15, and as a university student, he further grew his fanbase in London through creative mashups performed at Tamil society university talent shows. His first original song was a feature track titled "Malliga", released in 2018 through IFT Prod.
2018–2022: Oru Nation Entertainment and VAERAAN
[edit]In 2018, Sahi joined Oru Nation Entertainment, a Tamil independent music label founded by MC Sai, where he collaborated with fellow artist Ratty Adhiththan. During his time at Oru Nation, he released "Nenjinile Rebirth" (2018) alongside MC Sai, and "Naan Kudikka Poren" (2019) alongside Ratty Adhiththan. Both tracks quickly went viral, particularly in India, Malaysia, and Singapore, helping to establish Sahi Siva as a prominent figure within the Tamil independent music scene.[12] These early releases garnered millions of views, further solidifying his presence in the growing industry. "Naan Kudikka Poren" has surpassed 90 million views on YouTube, whilst "Nenjinile Rebirth" has passed 60 million views.[17][18]
On October 30, 2019, Sahi released his debut album "Vaeraan", which featured 10 tracks and was met with widespread acclaim. The album included hit songs such as "Azhagu Mayile" featuring MC Sai, and "Ciroc", both of which have received millions of audio streams to date. Vaeraan showcased Sahi's musical versatility and established him as a key figure in the Tamil independent music space.[12]
Following this success, Sahi released several singles, including "Naanga Thaan Yaaru" (2020) with DEYO, amidst the challenges of the COVID pandemic. Other notable releases include "Neethane" (2020), "Uyir Thedal" (2021), and "One Time" (2021) featuring Magisha Baheerathan, each demonstrating his evolving sound and expanding reach.
2022 - Present: UNNAALE and Album World Tour
[edit]In 2022, Sahi parted ways with Oru Nation to form his own independent Tamil music label, Sahi Siva Music Ltd. Under this new banner, he began working on the next phase of his musical journey with the preparations for his second studio album, "Unnaale" (2024). This album was preceded by a series of singles, including "Devathai" (2023), "Iravillaa Maalai" (2023) featuring Maanasi G Kannan, "Ammamma" (2023) featuring Nithyashree Venkataraman, and "What A Vadivu" (2023) featuring Ratty Adhiththan, leading up to the title track single "Unnaale" (2024). The complete album was released on March 27, 2024, featuring a total of 16 tracks, comprising 10 songs and 6 instrumental background score pieces. The album surpassed 10 million audio streams on Spotify in November 2024.[19][20] The music videos for these singles created a shared cinematic universe, Sahi's Cinematic Universe, where the narratives from the videos were interconnected, culminating in a final showdown in the music video for "Straight Outta Thirupathi" (2024). The storyline explored a fictional Sahi character being portrayed as a play-boy with multiple female love interests. leading to him being captured and then escaping.[4][16][21]
After the release of the album Unnaale, Sahi continued to release singles while embarking on a global tour to promote the album. The "Unnaale Album World Tour (2024/2025)", is set to take him to 35 cities globally, and is on track to culminate in London by mid-2025.[22] The singles released in 2024 post-album include "Thaali Thevaiyilla" (2024) featuring Magisha Baheerathan[5], Venum (2024) featuring Yung Raja, and "Thozhiye" (2024) featuring Shakthisree Gopalan.
It was announced in July 2024 that Sahi Siva will make his debut as a music composer for Tamil cinema with the upcoming film "DNA". Directed by Nelson Venkatesan and starring Atharvaa and Nimisha Sajayan, the film features contributions from five composers, including Sahi. DNA is slated for release in 2025.[8][9][23]
Sahi is also an accomplished live performer, regularly headlining shows that showcase his dynamic stage presence.[24] He frequently performs across Europe, North America, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Australia.[25][21] Additionally, he has opened for renowned Tamil music artists such as Sid Sriram, Santhosh Narayanan, Yuvan Shankar Raja, and Mugen Rao during their tours.[26] Beyond performing, he is deeply involved in every aspect of his craft, from songwriting and music production to audio engineering. Sahi received his YouTube Silver Creator Award in April 2023 for reaching 100,000 subscribers on his channel.[27]
