History
[edit]2023 jun First
[edit]Kerala Kalamandalam Churuthurthi recently witnessed a remarkable moment when a group of girls joined to learn Kathakali. Among them was a girl named Sabri who gave a strong message that art transcends the barriers of caste and religion.Hailing from the Muslim community, Sabri's passion for kadhakali was inspired by her father Nizam Ammas, an environmental photographer in Kollam.Nissam, a photographer, used to regularly photograph Kathakali performances at the temples near their home. Sabri, who used to accompany his father from the age of six, found himself fascinated by the vibrant costumes and elaborate make-up of Kathakali. This early exposure left an indelible mark on her young mind.
Education
[edit]Sabri's love for kathakali blossomed when he was in the eighth standard of school. She and her family decided to join Kerala Kalamandalam after completing her 7th standard from Government Jawahar High School, Edamulakkal. Sabri, who broke barriers and entered history, became the first Muslim girl in Kalamandalam to learn kathakali from the Muslim community. Before joining Kalamandalam, Sabri had also studied Mohiniyattam, Kathakali. Started studying Kathakali under the tutelage of Aromalin from Chadayamangalam.
In Kalamandalam
[edit]Historically, Kathakali training in Kalamandal was exclusively for boys and required intense dedication and practice. However, it was only last year that the institution opened its doors to girls. In the second batch of admissions, eight girls, including Sabri, from South and Northern Kathakali style of training was pioneered. Their daily routine includes kathakali practice from 4:30 am to 9:30 am followed by regular academic classes. In the evenings there is an opportunity to perform Kathakali live at Koothambalam.
Family
[edit]Supported by father Nizam, mother Anisha and brother Yaseen , she paves the way for more girls to embrace the rich cultural heritage of Kathakali, regardless of their background or faith.
