Style

[edit]

Sabda Armandio is primarily known for his work in absurdist literature,[1] though he also incorporates elements of magical realism. Both of these styles are prominent in his novel 24 Hours with Gaspar (Indonesian: 24 Jam Bersama Gaspar Sebuah Cerita Detektif) which has a nonlinear plot, often shifting abruptly between ideas or events with little to no transition. It includes convoluted plotlines that intertwine and overlap in seemingly unrelated areas and incorporates intentionally peculiar or unexpected behavior in characters throughout the book. Additionally, Armadio draws inspiration from Latin American literature, specifically the magical realist urban detective stories by writers including Paco Ignacio Taibu.[2] 24 Hours with Gaspar also contains components of magical realism, for example, Cortazar the sentient and spirit-infested motorcycle.
