Rozh Shamal, (5 September 1995 - 30 June 2019) better known as Rozh, was a Swedish rapper and artist with a Kurdish/Iraqi heritage. Shamal was murdered outside his gate in June 2019, which created a great stir in the media.[1][2]

Biography

[edit]

Shamal grew up in Västerort in Stockholm, with his parents and two brothers. His 33-year-old brother Shalaw was murdered in a gang shooting in Rissne in 2018, and Rozh strived until his death to find those behind the murder. Shalaw lived a life of crime which he tried to leave but failed.[3][4]

Career

[edit]

Shamal's hip-hop career began when he was discovered by producer Viktor Ax and had a guest appearance on his songs Soprano and Epilepsi. A year after this, he released his first own single, Dras till problem, which was also the last single Shamal managed to release before his death.[5]

As of October 2020, Rozh had over 150,000 monthly listeners, and his debut song, Dras till problem, had been played over 9 million times on Spotify.[6]

Death

[edit]

On June 30, 2019, when Shamal was out walking his dog, he was shot by a masked man waiting outside Shamal's gate. Shamal was hit several times in the torso and arm, and his life could not be saved. The perpetrator fled the scene on a light motorcycle, but was later arrested by the police and sentenced in March 2020 to 12 years in prison for murder and aggravated weapons offences. The convicted man's name was Fuad Ali and he was 19 years old at the time of the murder. Had he been 21 or older, he would have received 21 years in prison instead.[7][8][9][10]

Shamal left behind a large body of unreleased music, which his friends and family later released to honor his memory.[11]

In 25 November 2022, his debute album "Alltid varit här" was posthumously released.[12][13]
