Biography
[edit]Early life and education
[edit]Romain Tranchart discovered music at a young age and quickly oriented himself toward musical studies. He was trained by renowned musicians such as Carmen Bezzina, Luiz Arantes, Frédéric Favarel, François Fichu, and Steve Carbonara at the American School of Modern Music / IMEP Paris College of Music.[3] Initially passionate about rock, blues, and later jazz, he broadened his repertoire by taking an interest in electronic music production.
Musical beginnings
[edit]In the early 1990s, he formed his first group, Seven Tracks, with Davis Mouyal (vocals), Paul de Homem-Christo (drums), and Nicolas Bollier (bass). He began his career exploring various musical genres such as jazz, funk, and house. In 1999, he launched his first projects under the name Funk Legacy.[4]
Career
[edit]Modjo (1998–2003)
[edit]In 1998, he partnered with singer Yann Destagnol (alias Yann Destal) to form the duo Modjo. Their first single, Lady (Hear Me Tonight), was released in 2000 and achieved international success. Sampling Soup for One by Chic, the track reached the top of several global charts and became a reference of the French touch.
The self-titled album Modjo[5] was released in 2001 and included tracks such as Chillin' and What I Mean. Although the duo split in 2003, Modjo remains an iconic name in the French electronic scene.
Solo career and collaborations
[edit]After Modjo's dissolution, Romain Tranchart dedicated himself to solo projects. He collaborated with artists from diverse backgrounds, including Sebastien Tellier,[6] Shaggy,[7] Mylène Farmer,[8] Salif Keïta, and Daby Touré.[9] He also explored new musical styles, ranging from pop to deep house, and contributed to many projects, including composing the soundtrack for the film Barbecue[10] by Éric Lavaine (2014).
Musical style and influences
[edit]Romain Tranchart's style is characterized by a fusion of disco, house, and funk, often incorporating samples and punchy basslines. His primary influences include Chic, Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards, and pioneers of the French touch such as Daft Punk and Cassius.
