Rolling Stallones
Emcees Expertiz (l) and Nick Marv (r)

Rolling Stallones (2018–present) is a music group focusing on East Coast Boom Bap and Golden Era hip-hop. Their music focuses on heavily sampled instrumentals, hard-hitting lyrics, and use of movie samples to create atmospheric tracks. The group consists of emcees Expertiz, Nick Marvalous (aka Nick Marv), and producer Goji Rock.[1]

Expertiz was known for being an underground hip-hop solo artist representing Connecticut with his albums Exact Science (2010) and Disrupting Nature's Balance (2013).

Nick Marvalous self-released two solo albums, Wreckless Endangerment (2001) and Beautiful Music for an Ugly World (2003) on Redlite Reckords before starting the NYC punk-rock band Adios Mafia in 2007.[2]

Producer Goji Rock started Daikaiju Beats and created Monster Island Studios in 2016. He is the reclusive cousin of emcee Nick Marvalous.[3]

The Rolling Stallones are known for being a self-contained artistic unit. All production is done by Goji Rock for Daikiaju Beats Production and recorded at Monster Island Studio in Westchester, NY. They have collaborated with DJs Mo Niklz and Gravesend Selector, but their later albums enlisted the work of DJ M-TRI.

History

[edit]

The Rolling Stallones officially started in 2018 when Connecticut underground emcee Expertiz joined forces with NY born Nick Marv and producer Goji Rock. They all initially met at the Redlite Distrikt/Planet Studio in Bridgeport, CT back in 2002, as solo artists. They recorded a few tracks together and talked of collaborating, but were unable due to conflicting schedules.

In 2019, they reconnected and started collaborating on new music, sticking to the 80s/90s era hip-hop that influenced them all. [3]

In June of 2020, they released their debut Vol. 1: Cause for Concern, reintroducing the classic sound of chopped samples and braggadocio lyrics that were characteristic of early 1990's East Coast hip-hop.[4]

They quickly followed up with Vol. Two: Killa McGillacutty and Disciple of the Blade in September, 2020. On this album, they created a boom-bap western, using western styled samples over driving drums to tell the tale of two desperadoes and their adventures through the plains. "The production is quite cinematic and really draws the listener in with its solemn and scenic textures while the emcees deliver a passionate performance peppered with relatable anecdotes that most people latch on to. "[5]

Vol. 3: Negative Space was released in January of 2021. This album saw the group take a darker, more critical stance regarding the current events such as COVID, social media, political unrest, and police brutality, in addition to the relentless lyricism that they were known for.[6]

The group returned in May of 2021 with Vol. 4: Like Lie Depends on it..., a 21 track love-letter to hip hop and the underground music that permeated the late-night radio airwaves. "The 21 track body of work is stacked from beginning to end with anthemic production and fiery performances that blend the classic and modern era of hiphop."[7] This album also introduced singer Jet Cobretti on the track "Glorious".

Vol 5: Of Jewels and Justice was released in March of 2022. The album took a more gritty approach, as the group cited the works of film-maker Michael Mann as the auditory aesthetic for the record. In the 20 track work, the artists painted pictures of crime gone wrong, street vengeance, and fighting for a better way of life. "From the dark cinematic textures and rousing drum grooves, the crew delivers an intense lyrical performance that aims to fire the inner passion within the listeners..."[8]

After a 2 year hiatus, the group returned with their 6th album, Vol. 6: Boombox Emperors, in August of 2024. This album was much leaner than the previous two releases as it was only 16 tracks and clocked in at 46 minutes. The group returned to their Golden Age roots [9] , bringing back the hard-hitting lyrics they were known for. This time, the production reflected their cinematic and atmospheric roots while incorporating more diverse and international vibes. [10] The track "Demolition Men" is notable as the artists each share their perspective of how the Rolling Stallones came to be and finishes with an excerpt of their first recorded collaboration from 2002, "Hunnerd Jeepz" (produced and recorded by Praise the King of Planet Studio, Bridgeport, CT). Additionally, many of the tracks use the turntable work of DJ M-TRI to create old-school hooks.
