Rick Barrett is an American real estate developer and the co-founder of Barrett Lo Visionary Development, a property development company known for its work in Milwaukee. Barrett is most notable for developing The Moderne in Milwaukee, as well as The Couture, which has been credited with leading the urban renewal of downtown Milwaukee.[1]

Barrett has been named among the most influential people in Milwaukee by Milwaukee Magazine.[2]

Career

[edit]

After ending Marquette University and playing minor league professional baseball for the Baltimore Orioles organization,[3] Barrett co-founded Barrett Lo Visionary Development with developer and financier Tan Lo.[4] Barrett's early developments included building homes along Milwaukee's "Beerline," a nationally-recognized example of New Urbanism.[5]

Notable Developments

[edit]

The Moderne - Barrett originally developed Milwaukee's Moderne as a hotel[6] before finalizing it as a 30-story apartment tower.[7] Design is inspired by the 1930s Streamline Moderne architectural movement.[8]

The Couture - The tallest residential building in Wisconsin at 50 stories.[9] Barrett purchased the site, home to the former Downtown Transit Center,[10] and obtained the largest Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan ever executed in the state to fund construction.[11]

Southridge Mall (Wisconsin) - The conversion of a former Boston Store into a mixed use development including 790 residential units and retail offerings.[12] Developed in partnership with the city of Greendale, Wisconsin which owns the site.[13]

Mayfair Mall - A mixed used development that will include 918 apartments and 12,000 feet of retail space, designed to revitalize Mayfair Mall in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.[14]
