Richard S. Pinner is a British academic and educator specializing in applied linguistics, with a focus on authenticity, motivation, and the effects of technology on language. He is currently a faculty member at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. Pinner's research examines the intersections of language learning, digital communication, and cultural identity, contributing to both academic and creative fields.[1]

Education and Career

Pinner earned his Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Warwick, where he was supervised by Dr. Ema Ushioda. His doctoral research explored the role of authenticity in motivating language learners.[2] He also holds an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from King’s College London. At Sophia University, he integrates Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) methodologies to enhance English language instruction, particularly within a globalized educational context.[3]

Pinner is also a founding member of Hungry Wolf Press, an independent publisher that focuses on experimental literature and digital culture.[4]

Drawing from existential philosophy and empirical data, it is frequently cited in studies on authenticity and global English.[5] Social Authentication and Motivational Synergy: A Narrative of Language Teaching (2019, Routledge) Pinner explores how social dynamics influence motivation in teaching, offering narrative insights into the synergistic relationship between teacher-student motivation and their impact on learning outcomes.[6] Complexity Perspectives on Researching Language Learner and Teacher Psychology (2021, Multilingual Matters) Co-edited with Richard J.
