Rianne Downey is a Scottish singer-songwriter. Downey started her musical journey aged 16 and was awarded the James McAvoy scholarship for the Royal Conservatoire in Glasgow.[1] whilst attended Cardinal Newman High School.
British magazine Far Out reported that Downey aged 15 pursued a solo career by busking on Buchannan Street[2] in Glasgow.[3]
Downey gained a loyal fanbase through online streams and covers, as well as original songs.[citation needed] Reyt Good Music magazine reported[where?] that Downey's music blends indie, country-pop, and folk influences.
Downey's debut single, Fuel to the Flame[4], was released in February 2021 and Scottish Newpaper The Alloa Advertiser reported that Downey received more than 3,000 streams on the first day.[5]
Ths single peaked at number 3 on The offical UK physical singles sales chart on 14 October 2021.[6] The follow-up single Caledonia, peaked at number 19 on 30 December 2021. [7] The album 'Method to my madness' was released on 22 June 2023 and peaked at number 51 on the Offical UK Physical Album chart.[8]
In April 2021, Downey featured on TUNE, which is a BBC Scotland music show that features live performances, exclusive content, and stories from across Scotland [9]. A six minute short film entitled 'From Bellshill Busker to Breakthrough Artist' by 'TUNE and BBC Music introducing....' was broadcast on BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer [10]
On 14 June 2021 Downey appeared live on Sky Television, performing the Scottish national anthem for Sky Sports News ahead of Scotland's Euro 2020 opener against the Czech Republic [11]
In 2023, Downey was announced as the mystery singer to replace Jacqui Abbott, who, due to a health scare led to Abbott withdrawing from a festival concert in Warrington [12] with music legend Paul Heaton [13] and The Beautiful South.
Heaton & Downey both continued to work together on Heaton's subsequrnt sell out 2023 UK tour including performing on the main stage at TRNSMT and Scarborough Open Air Theatre. [14]
Heaton performed at Glastonbury on 28th June 2024 with backing singer Rianne Downey.[15]
In June 2024, the NME (New Musicial Express) announced that a new album, "The Mighty Several", produced by Ian Broudie, lead vocalist of The Lightning Seeds would be released on Friday 11 October 2024[16]. The new album includes duet contributions by Downey on five tracks.[17]. The album peaked at number 2 on the Offical UK Album chart on 24 October 2024 [18]
On Sunday 8 September 2024 Paul Heaton featuring Downey performed a hit-packed crowd-pleasing set at the Radio 2 'In the Park' event in Preston, UK [19]. Downey was subsequently guest singer to Paul Heatons winter 2024 UK tour.[20]
On 31 December 2024 Downey appeared live on Zara Janjua BBC Radio Scotland afternoons show alongside Texas (band) lead singer Sharleen Spiteri.[21]. Later that evening appearing live on BBC Scotland's Hogmanay TV countdown to midnight, Hogmanay 2024 TV programme performing three songs, alongside fellow scottish singer Marti Pellow and band Skipinnish. [22]

Tennent’s Light Breakthrough Artist of The Year - November 2022 Downey performed at the Specsavers Scottish Music Awards which were held at Barrowland Ballroom in Glasgow on 5 November 2022[28] Downey was awarded the Tennent’s Light Breakthrough Artist of The Year at the event.[29]
