Reward Flights

[edit]

Reward flights are special airline tickets travellers can obtain through the British Airways Executive Club frequent flyer programme[1]. Reward flights allow passengers to use Avios points[2] to pay for the majority of a ticket's cost, excluding taxes and fees.

History

[edit]

The British Airways Executive Club was established in 1982.[3] In the 1990s, British Airways introduced AirMiles as the currency for its frequent flyer program. AirMiles later evolved into BA Miles and then Avios.[4]

How Reward Seats are Earned

[edit]

Travellers can earn Avios points through various activities primarily associated with the British Airways Executive Club and redeem these points for reward seats.[5] Points are earned based on the frequency and type of flights booked with British Airways and other partner airlines. The number of points earned from each flight depends on factors such as the distance flown, the fare class, and the traveller's membership tier within the loyalty program. Below are some of the other ways to earn Avios points:

Partner Services: In addition to flights, Avios points can be accrued through stays at partner hotels and car rentals. Hotels like Marriott International and Hilton and car rental services such as Avis allow travellers to earn points based on the amount spent on their services.

Shopping: Avios points can also be gained by shopping with over 800 retail partners available through the British Airways Executive Club shopping portal.

Credit Cards and Financial Services: Various financial products, especially co-branded credit cards like the British Airways American Express card, offer Avios points as rewards for everyday spending.

Point Conversion: Members can convert points from other loyalty schemes, such as the Nectar program, into Avios.

Travellers can use Avios points to book reward flights on British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, AerLingus’ AerClub, and Qatar Airways Privilege Club.[6] The below tools and services simplify this process by tracking and displaying flight and hotel award availability:

Reward Flight Finder: Reward Flight Finder allows users to search for Avios award availability on British Airways flights by entering departure and arrival destinations.[7] The tool shows an overview of redemption options up to one year in advance.[8] It offers a free basic service that includes three economy seat searches a day and one alert every 24 hours. Paid subscriptions starting at £3.99 provide unlimited searches, more frequent alerts, and additional features like worldwide map searches and detailed points pricing insights.[9]

Using Online Tools: Websites like Max My Point and StayWithPoints track hotel award availability, show real-time pricing, and directly link users to the hotel’s booking platform to finalise reservations.

Browser Extensions and Apps: Extensions like Points Path integrate with platforms such as Google Flights to display award pricing next to cash prices, helping users decide whether to book with points or cash.

Impact of Reward Flights

[edit]

Reward flights reduce travel costs for frequent flyers by allowing them to use accumulated Avios points instead of cash to book seats.[10] Reward flights also offer the possibility of cabin upgrades.[11] The ability to use points for upgrades extends not only to flights operated by the airline where the points were collected but also to flights operated by partner airlines within alliances like Oneworld, thus increasing the utility and value of these points for travellers.[12]
