Reverend John Colley Faye (1907–1985) was a prominent Gambian educator, clergyman, and politician who played a significant role in shaping education, politics, and religious life in The Gambia[1].Born in Bathurst (now Banjul) in 1907 to a Serer father employed by the Public Works Department and a Wolof mother, Faye's legacy is marked by his contributions to education, the Anglican Church, and his pioneering efforts in Gambian politics.

Early Life and Education

J.C Faye as he was popularly known is the son of John Charles Faye, a Serere employee of the Public Works Department and Gracee Jarra-Owens, a Wolof mother. He was born in Bathurst (Banjul) on 25th February 1908. [2] .

Contributions to Education

Reverend Faye’s contributions to education extended beyond the classroom. In 1938, he organized the Gambia Teachers’ Union and became its first liaison officer. His pioneering work in education, particularly in the upriver regions, earned him an MBE in 1947[1].
