ResourceCo is an Australian company that operates in the resource recovery and recycling industry. The company participates in the circular economy by recovering materials from construction, demolition, and industrial industries. The company also operates a subsidiary, Tyrecycle, which processes tyres for recycling and resource recovery.
History
[edit]ResourceCo was founded in the early 1990s, focusing initially on recycling construction and demolition waste. The company has since expanded its operations to include refuse-derived fuel production from commercial and industrial waste. In 2006, it collaborated with Adbri to establish a refuse-derived fuel manufacturing facility, the first of its kind in Australia. The company has expanded this part of its operation both within Australia and internationally, with operations in Malaysia. In 2012, the company acquired Tyrecycle, a tyre recycling company, further expanding its waste recovery portfolio.
Operations
[edit]ResourceCo's operations cover several areas of resource recovery:
1. **Construction and Demolition Waste Recycling**: ResourceCo recycles construction and demolition waste into materials such as rubble and aggregates. Its facilities are located in South Australia and Victoria. In 2023, the company opened a glass recycling facility in South Australia with a capacity to process 20,000 tonnes of glass annually[1][2].
2. **Alternative fuels**: Since 2006, its facility in Adelaide has been manufacturing refuse-derived fuel, an alternative to fossil fuels from commercial and industrial waste. ResourceCo operates this facility in a joint venture with Veolia[3]. ResourceCo also operates a similar resource recovery and refuse-derived fuel production plant in Sydney, which processes up to 250,000 tonnes of waste per year[4][5][6][7].
3. **Soil recycling**: ResourceCo also reuses and recycles soil. The company has worked on some of the largest civil infrastructure projects across New South Wales and Victoria, including the respective M5 and the North-East Link projects[8].
4. **Tyre recycling**: Tyrecycle, a subsidiary of ResourceCo, processes millions of tyres annually and in 2021 the company was awarded International Best Tyre Recycler as part of the Recircle Awards[9]. The company operates tyre recycling facilities across Australia and produces tyre-derived fuel and rubber crumb for various uses. The company expanded its capacity in 2024 with the opening of a new facility[10][11] in East Rockingham, Western Australia where it is now also targeting the recycling of mining truck tyres[12][13].
Sustainability
[edit]ResourceCo is involved in reducing emissions by supplying alternative fuels to industries that traditionally rely on fossil fuels. Its partnerships, such as with Veolia, have allowed the company to provide fuel to cement kilns, reducing reliance on natural gas[14][15][16].In 2023, the company was recognized for its environmental efforts and was awarded ESG Business of the Year at the South Australian Business Chamber’s South Australian Premier’s Business and Export Awards[17].
