Introduction

[edit]

Modi is listed on the 2022 Forbes World’s Billionaires List, with a net worth of approximately $3.3 billion..[2], and is recognized as one of India's youngest billionaires.

Early Life

[edit]

Ravi Modi was born on 13 March 1977 in Kolkata, into an Indian businessman family. His entrepreneurial spirit emerged at a young age when he began helping his father at their retail store at just 13. For the next nine years, he immersed himself in learning the intricacies of the business, from managing inventory to attending to customers. The early exposure laid the foundation for his deep understanding of retail, customer service, and business operations.

Education

[edit]

Ravi Modi completed his Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree at St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. His education, coupled with experience at his father’s store, provided him with the foundation to pursue a career in business.

Professional Journey

[edit]

In 1999, Ravi Modi began his entrepreneurial journey by borrowing ₹10,000 from his mother to venture into the manufacturing of traditional Indian wear[3] . Starting with a modest setup, he supplied garments to Multi-Brand Outlets (MBOs) across India. Recognizing the untapped potential in wedding and celebration wear, a segment lacking organized players, he strategically shifted focus to cater to this market.

By 2005-2006, Modi expanded distribution to Large Format Stores (LFS) like Future Group, Westside, and Shoppers Stop. In 2008, he inaugurated the first exclusive brand outlet (EBO) for Manyavar in Bhubaneswar[4] , emphasizing operational efficiency and data-driven strategies to manage costs and deliver value. Over time, Manyavar established itself as a leader in Indian wedding wear for men, women, and children. In 2016, Modi further diversified the brand's portfolio by launching Mohey, a celebration wear line for women, while maintaining a strong focus on market demand and customer service.
