Ram Aviram (Hebrew: רם אבירם; born December 18th, 1955) is an Israeli Diplomat, former Israeli ambassador to Greece, and an expert in Water diplomacy.

Biography

Aviram was born in Tel Aviv in 1955. In 1983, he completed the political cadet course at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During his period in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Aviram held a series of positions, and he was stationed, among others, in Yangon, Copenhagen, and London, where he served as a media consultant with the British and Arab press.

In the years 1995 to 2000, Aviram was the chief coordinator for water affairs as a part of the multilateral negotiation that started at the Madrid Conference between Israel with representatives from Arab Middle Eastern countries.[1][2][3] During this time, Aviram served as a representative of the Israeli government for the establishment of the Middle East Desalination Research Center (MEDRC) established in Oman in an Israeli-American-Arab partnership.[4][5][6][7] Furthermore, Aviram was a part of the peace talks between Israel and the PLO at Camp David, as he was in charge of water coordination.[8][9]

In 2000, Aviram was appointed as the chief of staff of who was then the Israeli minister of foreign affairs, Shlomo Ben Ami. Aviram continued his role in 2001 when Ben Ami was replaced by Shimon Peres.[10][11] During his time as chief of staff, Aviram corresponded with the negotiations between Israel and Lebanon regarding water pumping from the Wazzani river.[12][13]

In 2003, Aviram was appointed as the Israeli ambassador to Greece.[14] During this time, Aviram was in charge of coordinating the Israeli delegation to the 2004 Olympic games in Athens.[15]

Water Diplomacy

During his period at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Aviram gained experience in negotiating on water related issues, and thus gained experience in water diplomacy. After his term at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Aviram started a consulting firm that specializes in water diplomacy.[10] Aviram is also part of the special governmental task force that was established for the restoration of the southern Jordan River.[16][17]

Aviram is also a lecturer on water diplomacy at academic institutions, including the Technological University of Northern Greece and the Athens Institute of International Relations.[18]
