Jefni Mary Raffealla Fernando, (born 3 October 1990), popularly as Raffealla Fernando, is a Sri Lankan fashion designer, stylist, and a fashion photographer.[1][2] Apart from fashion designing and photography, she is also a fashion lecturer, celebrity stylist.[3][4] She is the founder of "Raffealla Fernando Celebrity Calendar" (RFCC).[5][6][7]
Personal life
[edit]Raffealla Fernando was born on 3 October 1990 in Kandana, Sri Lanka as the eldest of the family. Her father Johnson Fernando is a businessman and a former soccer player. Her mother is a housewife. Raffealla completed her education at St Bridget's Convent, Colombo.[8] During the school period, she was an active member of the Photographic Society.[9]
Career
[edit]After completing O/Ls, she started to study fashion designing at the Academy of Design. At the same time, she studied art at Shanthi foundation.[9] At the age of 13, she did a solo art exhibition. Some years later, her paintings won awards at the Japanese national art gallery.[8] Later she excelled in jewelry designing from the Jewel Cad and obtained a higher national diploma in Jewelry designing.[10] She started to work as a fashion journalist at the age of 18 and continued for 5 years. In 2007, she became a professional fashion designer. Three years later in 2011, she became a fashion photographer under the photography brand "Raffealla Fernando Photography".[3] In 2009, she founded her luxury designer brand "RAFFEALLA".[10][11]
In 2012, she was invited to Nolcha New York fashion week. In 2013, she launched the first Raffealla Fernando Celebrity Calendar (RFCC) which is published annually featuring multiple celebrities across Sri Lanka.[12][13] Through this calendar, she introduced dark art, styling, and conceptualized photography to Sri Lanka.[11][14] The ninth RFCC calendar was launched on the 16 February 2021 at the Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo.[3][15][16]
In 2016, she became a finalist at the New York fashion awards.[10] Raffealla has received 13 fashion awards including the Best fashion photographer of the year at the International Achievers Awards (IAA) London in 2017.[17] She was also awarded the BAFTA best photographer of the year award and reached 8th place in world rankings in the same year.[12] In the meantime, she had the opportunity to design for the 69th in 2016 and 71st Cannes film festival in 2018.[10]
In 2018, she founded the "Raffealla Bridal" company and later in 2019, co-founded the Finc company.[10][11] In 2020, she started the sustainable handmade jewelry brand called "Dandelion". All the jewelry is made out of recycled and up-cycled fabrics. Recently, she made a ready-to-wear line brand called "Mermaidish".[3][8] In 2020, she also launched the first solo photography virtual exhibition , which was released through Raffealla's Facebook and Instagram account on 21 November 2020 from 6 pm.[17][18][19][20] The 2021 calendar was released on 25 January 2022 including the celebrities: Shanudrie Priyasad, Dinakshie Priyasad, Saranga Disasekara, Raveen Kanishka, Shalani Tharaka, Madhavee Wathsala Anthony, Sachini Ayendra, Sangeetha Weeraratne, Sachini Nisansala, Randhir Witana, Niranjani Shanmugaraja.[21] The 2022 calendar was released on 11 January 2022.[22][23] The 11th celebrity calendar was released on 11 January 2023.[24]
