Puja Tomar (born 5 December 1993) is an Indian professional mixed martial artist who currently competes in the Strawweight division of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).[2] She also competed in ONE Championship and Matrix Fight Night, where she was the MFN strawweight champion.[3]

Background

She was born in the village of Budhana in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh [4] Her parents were farmers in an agriculture-driven region. Her two older sisters and her father died when she was only seven years old.[5]

She took up Wushu at the age of six to express herself and won many medals in national and international competitions.[6] Tomar previously represented India in the World Wushu Championship 2015 held in Jakarta, Indonesia.[7] She was a five-time national Wushu champion.[8][9] She achieved a record of 67-5.[5]

Mixed martial arts career

Early career

She made her professional mixed martial arts debut in India's leading promotion, Super Fight League, in 2013. She subsequently secured two knockout victories.[5]

One Championship

Tomar debuted in ONE Championship by facing Tiffany Teo at ONE: Immortal Pursuit on November 24, 2017. She lost the fight by submission in the first round.[10]

Tomar faced Jihin Radzuan on March 9, 2018, at ONE: Visions of Victory. She lost the fight by submission in the second round.[11]

Tomar faced Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol on January 19, 2019, at ONE: Eternal Glory. She won the fight by split decision.[12]

Tomar faced Stamp Fairtex on January 10, 2020, at ONE: A New Tomorrow.[13] She lost the fight by technical knockout in the first round.[14]

Matrix Fight Night

Tomar has competed in Matrix Fight Night, securing four consecutive victories. She finally claimed the strawweight title at MFN 10 on November 18, 2022, by defeating Bi Nguyen.[3]

Ultimate Fighting Championship

Tomar faced Rayanne dos Santos on June 8, 2024, at UFC on ESPN 57.[15] She won the fight by split decision.[16] She became the first woman born in India to debut and win in the UFC.[4]
