Draft:Princess Elizabeth Trough

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Princess Elizabeth Trough (PET) is a narrow zone of deep water separating the southern end of the Kerguelen Plateau from Antarctica.[1] Geophysical data points to the Princess Elizabeth Trough as the sector in which the separation of India and Antarctica began.[1]

It is 350 kilometers wide with a depth of over 3,500 meters.[1] It is underlain by a thin oceanic crust layer. The PET is one of the only channels deep enough to connect the Australian-Antarctic Basin in the east to the Weddell-Enderby Basin in the west, providing a route of exchange for Antarctic bottom water.
