Dr. Potluri Gangadhara Rao is an Indian surgeon, medical administrator, and philanthropist known for his contributions to healthcare and community service in Andhra Pradesh, India.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Born on November 20, 1946, in Komaravolu village, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, Gangadhara Rao completed his early and secondary education in Addada. He pursued his medical education at Sri Venkateswara Medical College, where he obtained his M.B.B.S. degree. He further specialized in General Surgery, earning his M.S. from the prestigious Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh.[1].
Medical Career
[edit]After completing his postgraduate studies, Dr. Rao worked as a registrar in general surgery and plastic surgery at Nehru Hospital, PGIMER Chandigarh. In 1977, he established a private practice in Gudivada, Andhra Pradesh, which developed into a 50-bedded multi-specialty hospital with his wife, Dr. Sarada Potluri [1]
Indian Medical Association Involvement
[edit]Dr. Gangadhara Rao was a life member of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and the Association of Surgeons of India. He served as the President of the IMA Andhra Pradesh State chapter for the 2016-17 term. Additionally, he held positions in various IMA committees, including the chairmanship of the Past Presidents' Forum of IMA Andhra Pradesh State and membership in the Political Liaison Committee of the National IMA [2]. He was elected National Vice President of IMA for the 2018-19 term. He was part of the national advisor committee established to prepare a response to COVID [3] in India. Tragically, Dr. Rao was one of the medical professionals who lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic while serving patients. His sacrifice and service were commemorated by the IMA Andhra Pradesh Chapter during COVID Martyrs' Day, highlighting his dedication to the medical profession and public health [4].
Lions Club International Involvement
[edit]Joining the Lions Club of Gudivada in 1978, Dr. Rao had held numerous leadership positions within the organization. His notable roles include:
- Lieutenant Governor of District 324 C1 (1992-93)
- District Governor 324 C1 (1994-95)
- Multiple Council Chairman MD 324 (1995-96)
- Leadership Chairman of Multiple District 324 (1996-1999)
- GMT Coordinator of MD 324C (2011-2014)
Dr. Rao has received several accolades from Lions Clubs International, including four International President's Appreciation Certificates, a Leadership Medal, and an International President's Medal. He is also a 5 Diamond Melvin Jones Fellow and a Life Member of Lions Clubs International [1][5]
Contributions to Healthcare
[edit]One of Dr. Gangadhara Rao's significant contributions was his role in establishing the Lions Cancer Treatment and Research Center in Visakhapatnam. He was instrumental in securing a grant of one crore rupees from the Central Government and an additional 15 lakh rupees from the Lions Clubs International Foundation for this project.[1]
