Pepe's Piri Piri (often shortened to Pepe's) is a British multinational high street takeaway restaurant chain, specialising in piri piri chicken. Founded in London in 2004, it has grown to expand to approximately 200 branches across seven countries, of which 191 are in the UK alone.[3] The company's menu largely revolves piri piri flame-grilled chicken, as pieces, wings, sandwiches, burgers, quesadillas, burritos and salads, whilst also offering a small selection of fried chicken-, lamb- and beef-based dishes.[7] All food sold at its branches is halal, bringing it in line with other takeaway chains in the UK such as Dixy Chicken and many Nando's, Subway and KFC branches: several branches are HMC-approved.[8]

History

[edit]

The company was founded in London in 2004 by Munir Hussain.[2] As it expanded, it caught the attention of Sohaib Masood, at the time a university student in London, who, upon return to Birmingham, opened franchised branches in his city with his family. A trip to Dubai in 2019 led him to believe in potential for the brand there, where the chain now has two branches. Sohaib became the managing director for the company.[5] In 2016, Pepe's had 91 branches across the UK.[9] By 2024, they have expanded to 191 branches in the UK, and a growing presence in Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco and Pakistan.

Food safety and hygiene

[edit]

There have been stark variations across branches, but almost all getting good to high hygiene ratings from the Food Standards Agency, and only a couple quite poor.[10]

In Scotland, all 24 branches rated by the FSA have received the highest 'Pass' hygiene ratings.[12]
