The Welfare and Islamic Dakwah Organisation Malaysia (Malay: Pertubuhan Kebajikan dan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia) or WIDOM is a welfare organisation consisting of Malaysian Malays. It was founded to protect Islam and the position of the Malays[1] as well as to safeguard Malays especially in terms of economy and safety[2]. In 2021, its membership exceeded 350,000[3]. The organisation is also known as the Three Lines (Malay: Tiga Jalur), referring to the three colours found on the emblem, i.e. red, yellow and green[4].
WIDOM was registered as a non-governmental organisation on May 10th 1983[5] in Kedah. At present, the organisation is led by Dato' Mohd Foad Mat Isa, elected in 2022[6] who succeeded Dato' Ramli Norani (d. 2021)[7].
Controversy
[edit]Involvement in organised crime
[edit]The Three Line group was listed as a criminal syndicate by the Ministry of Home Affairs[8], WIDOM however was confirmed not to be connected to the outfit[2] and denied involvement in organised crime[4]. On the contrary, a splinter group from the organisation was involved in organised crime, namely the Geng 30 and Double 7[9].
