Peace of Krzyszkowo ( German: Frieden von Krzyszkowo ) - an agreement concluded on August 30, 1157 in Krzyszkowo near Poznań between Bolesław IV the Curly and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa .
Causes
[edit][ edit | edit code ] Władysław II the Exile, removed in 1146 by his younger brothers, met with the emperor in Bamberg in 1157 and obtained an intervention in Poland . Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa's army crossed the Oder , whose defense line was abandoned, the towns on the Oder - Głogów and Bytom Odrzański - were burned . The imperial troops entered the country without any problems. Bolesław IV the Curly did not fight. When the emperor reached Poznań, Bolesław asked for peace, which was in fact concluded.
Consequences
[edit][ edit | edit code ] Bolesław's humiliation was then enormous - he stood before the emperor barefoot, with a sword at his neck. He was forced to pay homage and accept the following conditions:
- he was ordered to appear in Magdeburg to answer the charges against his brother,
- he promised to pay Frederick 3,400 silver marks as repayment for the emperor's contribution to the expedition.
He also agreed to the return of Władysław II the Exile, and with him three of his children. This led to the division of Silesia : a part with Racibórz for Mieszko Tanglefoot , the Duchy of Opole for Bolesław the Tall . The pledge of the obligation was provided by hostages, among whom was the youngest brother Casimir . Poland became a fief of the Holy Roman Empire . For this price Bolesław the Curly was to rule the country .
