Payara Services is a UK-based open-source software company that provides enterprise Java solutions. It was founded in 2014 by Steve Millidge, following Oracle's decision to end commercial support for GlassFish.[1]

History

[edit]

Payara Services was founded in 2014 with the goal of maintaining a commercial and open-source alternative to Oracle GlassFish. Payara Server, the company's first product, was based on the GlassFish codebase and provided an open-source application server compatible with Java EE (now Jakarta EE).[2] In response to growing demand for microservices-based architectures, Payara later released Payara Micro, a lightweight runtime for deploying Java applications in microservices environments.[3]

Products

[edit]
  • Payara Server: A Jakarta EE-compatible application server intended for use in enterprise settings where high availability and scalability are required.[4]
  • Payara Micro: A lightweight, container-friendly version of Payara Server designed for deploying microservices and cloud-native applications.[5]
  • Payara Cloud: A cloud-based platform as a service (PaaS) that automates the deployment of Jakarta EE applications in cloud environments.[6]

Contributions to Jakarta EE

[edit]

Payara Services is a participant in the Jakarta EE working group, contributing to the development of enterprise Java standards.[7] Payara has also contributed to the MicroProfile initiative, which defines microservices standards for enterprise Java.[8]

Client Base and Use Cases

[edit]

Payara Services provides solutions to a range of industries, including finance, government, and telecommunications. One of its publicly referenced clients is BMW, which transitioned to Payara Server for its enterprise Java needs.[9]

Open-Source Commitment

[edit]

Payara Services supports the development of open-source projects, including Payara Server and Payara Micro. The company also actively contributes to the MicroProfile community.[10]

Awards and Recognition

[edit]
  • Payara contributed to the Eclipse Foundation's Duke’s Choice Award in 2019 for its work on Jakarta EE.[11]
