Dr. Paul Schlueter (born May 10, 1933) is a literary scholar and author best known for his pioneering work on Nobel Prize-winning novelist Doris Lessing.[1] He has significantly contributed to English and American literature through his critical studies and publications,[2] and is also known for his collaborations with his wife, Dr. June Schlueter and his role in founding the Doris Lessing Society.[3]
Early Life
[edit]Paul Schlueter was born on May 10, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, the elder son of Paul G. Schlueter and Ruby Okopski. In 1974, he married Dr. June Mayer Schlueter, Charles A. Dana Professor Emerita of English and retired provost at Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania.[4]
Education
[edit]Paul Schlueter completed his Ph.D. at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he wrote an essay on Doris Lessing for Contemporary British Novelists, edited by Charles Shapiro[5] He was the first American scholar to write a doctoral dissertation on Doris Lessing.[6][7]
Career and Contributions
[edit]Dr. Schlueter’s early work on Lessing includes The Novels of Doris Lessing (Southern Illinois University Press, 1973),[8] an in-depth analysis of Lessing’s, The Golden Notebook. His correspondence with Lessing blossomed into a lifelong friendship,[9] and he later edited her only collaborative book, A Small Personal Voice: Essays, Reviews, Interviews (Knopf 1974). [10]
In 1971, Dr. Schlueter organized the first session on Lessing's work at the annual Modern Language Association convention, which eventually led to the establishment of the Doris Lessing Society.
Paul Schlueter is the author of numerous books and essays on English and American literature. He wrote a critical study of Pulitzer Prize-winning New Orleans author Shirley Ann Grau.[11] Along with his wife, Dr. June Schlueter, he co-edited several reference books, including An Encyclopedia of British Women Writers (Garland, 1988; rev. ed. Rutgers University Press, 1999) and a volume of selected writings of Lafayette College's Francis A. March, the first person to hold the title Professor of English.
Awards and Sponsorships
[edit]Together, the Schlueters sponsor the annual Paul and June Schlueter Lecture in the Art and History of the Book at Lafayette College, the Neil J. McElroy and Marilyn B. Kann Award, which is given to a member of the library support staff,[12] and the Mark I. Koshar, M.D. ’70 Prize, awarded to a graduating senior pursuing a medical career. [13]
