Paul Richard Goddard (born January 1950)BSc.(pharm), MBBS,MD, DMRD, FRCR, FBIR,FHEA is a retired professor of Radiology at the University of the West of England and retired consultant radiologist from Bristol Royal Infirmary. He is best known for his work on the radiology of the chest and the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging as a diagnostic technique. He is also the author of multiple books and the leader of jazz band known as Dr Jazz since 1985. Goddard has raised millions of pounds for the use of MRI in the NHS and other medical and educational causes.

Paul Richard Goddard was born in Croydon, Surrey in January 1950. Initially educated at Winterbourne Primary School and Selhurst Grammar School for Boys, Goddard received Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from University College London with an intercalated bachelor's degree in Pharmacology.


Career:

After house jobs at the Westminster Childrens' Hospital and St Pancras Hospital (UCH group) and Senior House jobs in London (including Kings College Hospital and the National Temperance Hospital (UCH Group), Goddard moved to Bristol in 1977 to train in radiology. In 1979 he passed the Diploma in Medical Radiodiagnosis (DMRD) In 1982 he passed the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) In 1982 he submitted his thesis for MD and this was awarded in 1983. He was appointed as a consultant at the Bristol Royal Infirmary in 1983, as Head of Training for the Bristol radiology Training Scheme in 1997 and Visiting professor at the the University of the West of England in 2000. He retired from the NHS in 2004. Goddard was appointed Civil Adviser on CT and MRI to the RAF (Honorary Air Commodore) in 1991 and remained in this role until he retired.

Many published research papers and articles on chest imaging including Computed Tomography in Pulmonary Emphysema Goddard P, Nicholson E, Laszlo G and Watt I Clinical Radiology (1982) Vol 33, 379-387 This includes the quantitative and semi-quantitative analysis of pulmonary emphysemas known as the Goddard Technique.
