Paul Bloch (born December 15, 1960) is a French-American engineer and entrepreneur, known for his work in the field of data storage and management. He is the co-founder and president of DataDirect Networks (DDN), a company that has become a leader in providing high-performance data storage solutions, particularly for artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.[1][2]

Education and career

[edit]

Bloch was born on December 15, 1960, in France. He pursued his early education in engineering at the National Superior School of Telecommunications (ENST) in France. Bloch moved to the United States and earned a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).[3][4][5]

In 1998, Paul Bloch co-founded DataDirect Networks (DDN) alongside Alex Bouzari. The formation of DDN followed the merger of two earlier companies, MegaDrive and ImpactData. From its inception, DDN was focused on providing innovative data storage solutions designed to meet the growing needs of data-intensive industries. Under Bloch's leadership, DDN quickly became a major player in the data storage industry, known for its scalable and high-performance storage systems.[6][7][8][9][10]

Under his leadership, DDN has played a significant role in the AI boom, partnering with leading technology companies like NVIDIA to provide the necessary storage infrastructure for their supercomputers. DDN's storage systems are known for their ability to deliver extremely high data transfer speeds, which are essential for the performance of AI models and large language models (LLMs). In recent years, DDN's systems have been deployed to handle the storage needs of some of the world's most advanced AI projects, including large-scale deployments involving thousands of GPUs. Bloch has helped DDN expand its product offerings to cater to a wide range of industries, including financial services, healthcare, and scientific research, all of which require high-capacity and high-speed data storage solutions.

In 2010, Paul Bloch co-founded Whamcloud, a company that specialized in high-performance storage software. Whamcloud was focused on developing and supporting the Lustre file system, which is widely used in supercomputing environments. Bloch served as a board member of Whamcloud until the company was acquired by Intel in 2012.[11]

Personal life

[edit]

In 2021, Bloch purchased a waterfront property in Miami Beach for $7.1 million. The property, located on West 51st Street, is situated along the Flamingo Waterway.[12]

Bloch serves on the executive board of trustees of the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, Florida.[13]
