Patrick Tresset is a contemporary French artist and researcher based in Brussels.
Tresset develops robots and autonomous computational systems to produce series of drawings, paintings and animations the representation of human presence and experience using computational systems, AI, robotics, and traditional media. His works are most often presented in the form of performative theatrical installations that introduce artistic, expressive and obsessive aspects to robots’ behaviour. He has established himself internationally as one of the pioneers of computational creativity, graphics and performative robotic arts. Although he has focused exclusively on his artistic practice for the past decade, his research is referenced in over 300 academic publications, including drawing, psychology, AI, social robotics and computational graphics.
Tresset's work has been internationally exhibited in association with major museums such as Prada Foundation, The Pompidou Center, Tate Modern, Museum of Israel, The Victoria & Albert Museum, MMCA, TAM, Mori Museum, Grand Palais, BOZAR and at events such Ars Electronica, London Art Fair, Kinetica and Istanbul biennial.
His installations, paintings, drawings, and digital works are featured in public and private collections and have received prizes and distinctions, including from Lumen, Ars Electronica , NTAA-Liedst Foundation and the Japan Media Festival and have been featured in various media outlets, such as Art Press, Art Review, Beaux Arts, Frieze, Arte, Form, Wired, Vice, BBC, DeWelle, Le Monde, The New York Times and Neural. He was also nominated a 2017 WEF cultural leader.
Academia research
[edit]Originally a painter, Tresset is part of a generation of artists coming out of Goldsmiths' computing department. In 2004 Tresset joined Goldsmiths for an MSc degree in Arts Computing where from 2009 until 2012 he codirected the AIkonII project, a project which aimed to model and understand the sketching process. He also developed and taught the creative robotics module at Goldsmiths. In 2013 Patrick was a Senior Fellow at the Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstanz working with Prof. Deussen. Tresset has published research papers in the fields of computational aesthetics, social robotics, drawing research and AI.
