Patricia "Patsy" Murphy was a writer of children's textbooks as well as a writer for television shows [2]in the 1940s and then a popular children's book author. She published over 40 books including The Sweet Smell of Christmas, The Bunny Book and Good Night, Little Bear.
In 1947, Patsy wrote advertising copy at Young and RubicamYoung and Rubicam. [3] She met Richard Scarry at a party in Greenwich Village, New York and they were married soon after in 1948. [4]
In 1951 Patsy and her husband moved to the country, to a small cottage on a farm in Ridgefield, Connecticut. Their son "Huck" was born in 1953. [5]
Patsy Scarry wrote under the name Patsy Scarry for years, then changed to publish under the name Patricia M. Scarry. Some of her books were illustrated by her husband Richard, while others had various other illustrators. Many of her books were published under Little Golden Books.
While earlier editions of her books had no author nor illustrator name on the front page, subsequent editions have her husband, the illustrator's name on the front page eg "Richard Scarry's The Bunny Book".
Richard Scarry spoke of his disciplined working habits, supported by his wife Patsy. He kept strict working hours at his home office, during which Patsy was not to interrupt him except for lunch, when "she simply set a ham sandwich and pickles on his desk" and left him to his work. [6]
Patsy and her husband and son moved to Switzerland in 1968 and maintained a home in Gstaad. They returned to Nantucket, Massachusetts, U.S. each summer. https://scholar.lib.vt.edu/VA-news/ROA-Times/issues/1994/rt9405/940504/05040146.htm
