Panchapandavar is a 1999 Malayalam-language action thriller film directed by K. K. Haridas, on a script by Rafeeq Seelatt and Adv. Sethunath, starring Vijayaraghavan, Sithara, Kalabhavan Mani and Kasthuri Shankar. It is also Tini Tom's debut film.[1][2][3]
The film has no connection whatsoever to an unreleased film of the same name completed in 1980 starring Jayan.[4][5]
Plot
[edit]This is the tale of a four-member team of hired goons who go by the name of Kalloorkadan brothers headed by Balan. The others in the gang are Varkey, Gafoor and Lukose. The whole village is petrified by the gang and give in to their demands easily. Into this situation walks in Satyanarayanan, a jobless youth, to meet Balan. He does not have any idea what Balan and his mates are up to and goes about enquiring about him in the village. Everywhere that he goes to, he finds out that people treat him with respect and part with money at the least bidding. Satya enjoys his new-found status and goes about in the guise of the fifth brother, till he actually runs into the gang. After the initial rough treatment, Balan asks his gang to take in Satya, making the gang one of five - the eponymous Panchapandavas (the five Pandavas).
All the five, despite their tough demeanour, are decent individuals who have taken to crime out of sheer desperation. Gafoor, for example, has two grown-up daughters, and his family is under the impression that he is gainfully employed.
The gang faces their biggest dilemma when they are offered a million rupees to bump off a heiress – the beautiful Yamuna. Reluctantly, they go to stay in her mansion under the guise of a television team making a serial based on the family's history.
Yamuna has been adopted by the family doyen Achutha Kurup as his daughter and all the family property has been bequeathed to her. This attracts the ire of many members of the household. The five brothers who grow fond of Yamuna and reluctant to execute their contract, goes back to seek out the person who ordered the killing.
To their dismay they find out that the trail runs cold as the person who entrusted them with the contract on behalf of the original conspirator is dead. There is a trail of false leads, umpteen murder attempts on the hapless Yamuna, bodies of potential killers, and plenty of humourous incidents keeping the narrative going. When one of the five loses his life in the bid to save Yamuna, the remaining four decide to see the end of it all, and catch the killer red-handed. Who the unknown plotter is, turns out to be an unexpected twist at the end.
