Draft:Only in the Philippines

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Only in the Philippines, sometimes spelled as "Only in da Pilipins", is an expression mostly used by Filipinos to describe socioeconomic and political phenomena that appears to only occur within the Philippines. A contemporary example of its use was by columnist Tony Lopez in connection to the assassination attempt hatched by the vice president against the current president of the Philippines, his spouse and the current speaker of the House of Representatives.[1] However, this expression is utilized in a derogatory manner when the country is compared to first world countries and relatively more affluent and politically stable countries in the Asia Pacific region and ignores the experiences of different countries with similar circumstances.

Criticism

[edit]

Writing in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, medical anthropologist Gideon Lasco criticized the expression stating that the problems and attitudes often criticized by Filipinos in the Philippines are not unique and are experienced elsewhere.[2]
