Niels Wittich (born 5 August 1972) is a German motorsport official who served as the Formula One race director from 2022 until his departure in 2024.
Career
[edit]Early career
[edit]Wittich has a background in motorsport where he has worked in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) and was, among other things, race director. He left DTM after 2021, in favor of working at the International Motor Sport Federation. Wittich served as race director for Formula 2 and Formula 3, while also assisting with Formula One.[1]
Formula One
[edit]Wittich was set to become the deputy race director for Formula One in 2022, working under Michael Masi. However, Masi was removed from his role before the season began due to his handling of the 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.[2] As a result, Wittich and Eduardo Freitas were both selected to serve as race director in 2022.[1][3] Wittich would become the sole race director for 2023, and remained in the position for 2024.[4][5]
Wittich departed from the position prior to the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix,[6] He was replaced by Rui Marques.[7]
