Nica (pen name of Nica Yoffe; born October 9, 1990) is an Israeli fantasy author who publishes her books independently in Hebrew and also translates and distributes them in English. She is known for her works that combine dark, realistic, and personal elements, representing a unique writing style within the fantasy genre.
Biography
Nica was born in the Soviet Union and immigrated to Israel with her family in 1993. She is the middle child in a family of three, a fact that significantly shaped her personality and independence.
Nica holds a bachelor's degree in humanities with a focus on literature from the Open University and a master's degree in a research track in literature from Tel Aviv University. She currently works as a professional proofreader.
Writing Style
Nica’s writing combines fictional fantasy worlds with significant personal experiences from her life. She draws inspiration from her experiences as a new immigrant in Israel, which included facing racism and social exclusion, living in Sderot under constant rocket attacks, and her personal struggle with bipolar disorder. A suicide attempt that required life-saving emergency treatment in Belgium, and the loss of her father to a similar illness, left a deep imprint on her work.
These events are translated into her books as piercing and dark writing characterized by a "gritty and thought-provoking" nature. Her style focuses on realistic and authentic descriptions, combining dark elements and complex character conflicts, aiming to convey emotional credibility and raise questions about power, vulnerability, and humanity.{{Note|"Gritty" writing refers to a depiction of harsh realities, including characters facing genuine and unembellished challenges and crises.}}
Writing Career
In 2020, during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the independent business she managed as a subtitle producer for leading companies in the industry collapsed. Following the crisis, she began writing with the goal of publishing her first book. In 2021, she published her debut novel, "The Death Horseman," which gained significant attention among readers and fantasy enthusiasts.
Since her debut, Nica has been actively promoting the romantic fantasy genre, one of the most popular genres globally, which has been experiencing a recent resurgence in Israel. Additionally, she advocates for independent publishing, aiming to encourage creativity and independent publishing among Israeli authors.
To date, she has published six additional books, all within the fantasy genre, incorporating diverse subgenres, including romance, erotica, and dark elements. Three of her books have been translated into English and are currently being adapted into cinematic audio books, which aim to enrich the reading experience with narration and rich soundscapes.{{Note|For more details on the cinematic audio book production: https://tech.walla.co.il/item/3704278}}
