Neoplecostomus sapucai, or Sapucaí River armored catfish was found between the dates 2001-2024. They can reach about 3.5 inches in length and they have elongated bodies, covered in bony plates. They have a broad head, bumpy lips, and tons of copper colored teeth. It is golden yellow and brown, and has blotches of color on it's sides and fins[1]
Sexual Dismoprhism
[edit]The males of this species have shorter and robust teeth, while females have more slender teeth. It says in the 9th paragraph of the Miami Herald article of the new species.[1]
Habitat
[edit]Neoplecostomus sapucai lives in stony, shallow streams that have crystal clear water and rapid flow. The species was found living near manmade things like highways or pastures, showing that humans don't pose that much of a threat on the species. The species is found in 16 different sites within the Sapucaí River drainage. The Sapucaí River drainage stretches between the Minas Gerais and São Paulo states, which are in eastern Brazil, and they are close to Rio de Janeiro. It says in the 12th paragraph in the Miami Herald article on the fish.[1]
Etymology
[edit]The researchers who found the neoplecostomus sapucai said that they named it that because of where they found it, Sapucaí River. It says in the 11th paragraph in the Miami Herald article.[1]

[edit]The team of researchers who found neoplecostomus sapucai are Pedro Uzeda, Isabel Paiola, Poliana Cesar, Vitor Kenzo Okubo, Wellington Marques-Frisoni, Breno Andrade and Francisco Langeani. It tells us in the 14th paragraph of the Msn article on the fish.[2]
