Neekhar Gadariya

Neekhar/Nikhar (नीखर/निखर)

Nikhar is a sub-caste of the Gadaria community. Nikhar is a cattle rearing and nomadic tribe known as Gadaria.

In ancient times, the Nikhar tribe used to take their flocks of sheep and goats from one place to another in search of pastures, due to which these people used to travel all over India. Each person of the Nikhar caste had a flock of 500 to 2000 sheep. Along with sheep and goats, the Nikhar shepherds also kept flocks of cows of the indigenous breed.

The place where sheep and goats live is called "Rivada".

These people also used to make blankets from the wool obtained from sheep. These people were also very skilled weavers. These people used to earn their living in the old times by selling milk and blankets.  Even today, the Nekhar people have large dairy industries in the districts around Delhi. The famous and high quality "Garhwal Paneer" of Delhi NCR is the gift of the Nekhar (Gadariya) community. A large number of industries in the name of "Lakshmi Dairy", "Lakshmi Ice Cream" and "Pal Dairy" can be seen in Delhi NCR.
